As a programmer, I disapprove of premature optimisation. You need to profile your life to work out where the money is going and make the changes that will make a big difference first. I guess there are some changes you can make that are just a case of changing your habits, but it's worth checking that any change you're going to make that will be costly in terms of convenience is actually going to make any appreciable difference.

The Credit Crunch - Cheap skate tips for the making of:

Go down the pub and "borrow" some peanuts.
Rescue tissue paper from the last time you went to the off-Licence (are they still called that?).
Find a box that some Christmas cards came in, the smaller the better.

Make some peanut brittle, you might need to rinse the salt off the peanuts first. Remember to use the sugar that you "borrowed" from the cafe (see Arch's earlier tip).

Wrap in the tissue paper, and put in the ex-Christmas card box.
It probably won't need wrapping as the front of the box has a picture on it.

Excellent!

I have an econimising dilemma:

I received a parcel yesterday, in a Jiffy bag (thanks Dayvo!). Obviously, I save Jiffy bags for reuse, hardely ever need to buy one.

Here's the rub - this particular parcel (as with two cards I've recived so far), had avoided being franked. So the stamp is reusable.

The dilemma? To reuse the stamp, I will have to soak the Jiffy bag - or at least cut out the bit the stamp is stuck to.... So I can't quite reuse both...

(I could, of course, cut out the bit with the stamp and stick something else over it, I suppose, or fold the Jiffy bag over much smaller.)

And false economy is a fine line. Sainsburys Basics bogroll is very cheap, but I'm finding I need to use 50% more each time. I'll have to do a fine calculation to see if that makes it more expensive than the normal stuff....

If I didn't have all this to think about, I'd start getting introspective so it's a good thing really....

Can't you leave the stamp where it is and take advantage of it when you use the jiffy bag? Or have I missed something?

simply steam it off.

Fill the kettle, then hold the switch in the 'on' position to prevent it switching itself off, and hold the envelope above the ensuing steam. Don't worry, it won't explode. The stamp should then just peel off, leaving the envelope intact. It is, however, technically treason.

You should get the most bourgeouis bogroll you can.
