Back on topic, I think the biggest advances are:
Medical: Things that killed people in my youth are now routine hospital visits
Technology: To limit it to the top three, They are EMail, The Internet and public GPS.
Housing: Outside loos have gone, as have houses without bathrooms, central heating, insulation, decent windows
and lots more ........

We have become more hypochondriacal and neurotic but we should all remember and be thankful that advances in medical science and surgical procedures have been absolutely gigantic.

You said you'd only mention this once!

For me, I STILL celebrate living somewhere that is a lot more tolerant than many places to people's beliefs, or lack of them. We have a STATE RELIGION, but no-one makes you practice it, or wear the funny clothes, or even respect the worshippers. You can even make up your own religion if you so choose. Be grateful!!!
Have said the same in this thread?
Have I?
That's what you mean?
My point above made the point that this country is tolerant on this issue.
And has become more more so in my lifetime.
So am grateful.
In line with the topic of the thread.
If you insist on going round in circles I can repeat it.

The UK does though have clerics of the state religion that are automatically members of the legislature. I think the only other country to do this is Iran.

One change for the better in this regard is that the UK now has women bishops.

The rise and rise of the English language.

As kids we were all forced to learn French or Esperanto as they were going to be the world's lingua franca but now the European Union has English as the default language (despite it not being the official language of any of its members) and English Language schools are ubiquitous.

It does make travelling and some aspects of international business easier on the whole yes.

In fact its quite difficult to practice when abroad because nearly everyone speaks English as a second language - until you get off the beaten track.

The downside is that we can come across as rather insular and ignorant when it comes to communicating with others.
Plus they know what we are saying - we don't always know what they are talking about .

Aaand learning foreign languages is a really good brain exercise all round ( I'm still struggling on with Spanish)
It gives insight into other nationalities culture, and ways of thinking, it also helps us get to know each other better - i know - not everyone is interested in these things - sadly imo ...

UK has more ( but not yet enough) women in many other positions and professions which were previously barred to them.

And increasingly have more rights and freedoms, which were hitherto impeded by society.

Shame it took so long for this 'full citizenry' to be properly recognised - but equality wasn't built overnight .

If you think that only bringing up your dislike of religion once per thread is admirably moderate, you might want to take a step back.
Strangely i am the same person across threads so certain things may be common.
Thanks for clarifying re this thread.
I have promised nothing to you.
Nor are you my censor.
I long ago decided to take a big step back from your posts (of which there are many in a very short period)- suggest you do the same with mine - no loss to me.
I've always been the little bear.
Seem to recall you said you'd been someone/something else before.

toodle pip.

The break up of the European Union, its started, It may not have finished yet but It will happen in my lifetime. I will give you @Brains 1,000 to 1 it will be Ireland first quickly followed by italy and it will happen within 20 years or more. Only slightly more ludicrous than your offer of a bet.

£10 at 1,000 to 1 odds over 20 years.
I'll take you up on that one.
Can you provide a guarantee of payment ?

Would you put money on that ?

In my opinion it's a case of 'when' not 'if', England will rejoin the EU.
10 years possibly, more likely 20 years.
To save face, England may not 're-join' in full, but rejoin in all but name.

Yes the same guarantee your offering.
