Shimano spray chain and cable lube. Expensive, but worth it.

Why? Very water repellent, so no rusting but DOESN'T pick up dirt and grit.

Finish line or Shinano. Wet lubes for road. Dry lube for MTB in dusty or sandy conditions. Winter on mtb is wet. Dry lubes do clog a bit more

Tri-flow.
But I use chainsaw oil in 3 speed hubs, because that's what the fellow in the hardware store told us to use when my dad and I bought bikes there in 1960's, still have the oiler somewhere, and no one has recommended different since. Sometimes called Bar Oil on the left side of the pond.

Does chainsaw oil only come in one 'grade'? I mean I'm not going top get asked what type of chainsaw oil I want?

Is it suitable for wet and dry conditions?

Yes, just one grade, although I expect there are variations in quality. I wouldn't have thought for a bicycle that would make a big difference. I bought a 1 litre bottle from an agricultural merchants. It will do me a lifetime I reckon. It is suitable for both wet and dry conditions. Only warning I would give is not to put it on too heavily. A small drop on each link is plenty, as per Mickle of these hallowed halls. (do a search on CC for "mickle method")

1 litre would last me about 50 thousand miles

Depends - there could be chainsaw 'dry' lube, chainsaw 'wet' lube, chainsaw 'super pro ceramic' lube and chainsaw 'just chop down the fkin tree' lube. They're all for different applications, y'know....

Quart has lasted me about 10 years. I believe they are all cut down the fekkin tree grade, at least where I am at. In a place with a large chainsaw sculpture community, this may vary. An artisinal grade, perhaps, for the more erudite user.

So is there anything actually *wrong* with using normal, everyday, common or garden bike oil or even just everyday general purpose, 3 in one style stuff? It's what I've always done, finding that giving the chain a good de-grease and rinse out every now and again much more effective in reducing grinding and such like.

I use Muc-Off Wet lube simply because that's what they had in Tesco at the time I needed some- does the trick.
