Rock N Roll Gold is my choice.

I this as well, do you find the chain sounds very dry, even after only a few days after lubing?

Weldtite all weather lube - cheap and very good

I'm interested in learning more about Finish line ceramic though - how does it compare to finish line wet lube (which I found attracts shoot very quickly)?

Finish line ceramic so that's plus 6 but honestly cleaning your chain regularly is the best option. Most lubes are good quality its the crap from the road etc etc that'll wreck your lovely chain.

I have Finish Line, Weldtite and Shimano - all have been bought on offer somewhere. I do like the Finish Line Dry in, well the dry but all the others as much of a muchness IMO.

I do agree though that the key to everything working smoothly and silently is keeping the drivetrain clean. I generally only ride roads and I cannot bear it when I can't shift smoothly or ride silently apart from my heaving chest and the wheels spinning.

9 times out of 10 a good clean of the drivetrain and re lube eliminates all these problems. And I am far from obsessive about this just being done as and when necessary. I use a Barberei chain cleaning tool / bath - £5 from Lidl and this Fenwicks http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fenwicks/fs1-cleaner-concentrate-ec020494.

I don't even have an outside tap so it's a bit of a pain cleaning but if I did a quick rinse off and wipe with an old rag would keep you going quite a long time.

I find it actively sheds mud. There are occasions where you get back and the bike is covered, but the chain is still clean between the rollers.

So is there anything actually *wrong* with using normal, everyday, common or garden bike oil or even just everyday general purpose, 3 in one style stuff? It's what I've always done, finding that giving the chain a good de-grease and rinse out every now and again much more effective in reducing grinding and such like.
3 in 1 is vegetable based, and may be a bit of a problem. I do not recommend it for this application, although it quiets a squeaky door. I often use 2 cycle engine oil, chainsaw oil, finish line as well.
