Our heating engineer who services it every year says it’s still surprisingly efficient

But at that age, non-condensing. Mine is the same; burns beautifully cleanly, but more heat than desired goes outside.

I doubt a modern boiler will last 37 years, sadly.

With the increase in grant for heat pump installation we've just been quoted £2,450 for ASHP, new HW cylinder and new rads and pipe work as required. That's supply and installation and comes with a 5 year parts and labour warranty.

You mean the plumber. Amazing how plumbers who are qualified to work on gas call themselves engineers. They're not.
Anyway, a 37 year old gas appliance will still be miles less efficient than a modern one. You'll get decent payback if you upgrade.

A plumber can't work on any gas appliance without additional training and qualifications.

Correct, but they're still plumbers. Being on a gas safe register does not make you an engineer.

I suppose we could go back and forth all day, but the base qualification is plumbing, but it is not the only qualification required to register as a gas engineer on the register as required by UK law.

You’re probably right, but I’ll change it when it finally packs in. We will be moving out of Oxford in a couple years when I finally retire, so I’ll let the next person change it.

My annual gas consumption, averaged over 5 years:

New condensing boiler: 14470kWh
Old non-condensing boiler: 13972kWh

I see the government have upped the financial assistance for air source heating systems, and now prices have shot up by a similar amount. Thankfully one of the guitarists in our band owns his own firm and did ours at barely more than cost.

Our Baxi is 28 years old and uses very little gas.
