I remember a nature programme I watched many years ago talking about weather

It said that, at the time, the strongest wind ever recorded at sea level was recorded in North Scotland - possible Orkney/Shetland but I can;t remember.
It was recorded by an official weather station and a few days later one of the staff was in the local pub and mentioned it to the locals
who hadn;t noticed it as anything different to normal!!!

Yes, I still remember the gales we used to get when my dad (in the RAF) was stationed at Kinloss - and I was only 10-11 at the time, so over 50 years ago.

The worst it has got in our house was closing the patio doors at about 10 p.m. a few evenings!!!

yes same here, normally when the OH, who is a southerner, requests it.

Officially its 173mph recorded in the Cairngorms, but the unnofficial record was 177 recorded by the Bryl Creem boys up on Unst. The latter may well have been even higher but 177 is the fastest recorded before the wind destroyed the weather station,

On occasion we've escaped the heat by sleeping downstairs, and then leave the patio doors open all night.
Gets spooky when the wild beasties are making noise just outside!

Old boy I know was telling me that towards the end of the summer of '76 he'd finally had enougn of sticky nights and being unable to sleep, so he decided to kip outside in the garden on a Z bed.

3 hours later it was hissing with 🌧

On the subject of hissing, I'm getting quite a dab hand at bleeding my radiators. I bought a radiator key a few months ago, for a mere £1 (from Screwfix). For years I struggled with a screwdriver, a knife, even a 2p coin. Now with a proper key it's so easy and this may sound sad, but I like to hear that hiss as the air escapes from the radiator, then wait for the water to spurt out! 🧐

As I post it's a mere 72 Fahrenheit in my flat! :cold: Add to that, it's peeing down outside :rain:(obviously!), which is making the air damp. You know what's coming next don't you!! Yes, it's time to get that fecking heating on!!:okay:

72F is 22C . That is more than warm enough for most of us. They recommend setting the heating to a maximum of 21C in living rooms, 18C in bedrooms.

Who are 'they'? 🤔 Are we talking those 'eco warrior' loonies here? 🧐

No.

"They" are organisations such as these
https://www.designerradiatorsdirect...ould-the-central-heating-thermostat-be-set-at.
https://www.britishgas.co.uk/the-source/no-place-like-home/whats-the-ideal-home-temperature.html

This last one notes that the UK government used to recommend 21C for living rooms and 18 for bedrooms, but now suggest 18 everywhere.

It as the old government recommendation I was remembering when I posted. I didn't know they had changed it.
