I did see something about some local governments having infra-red camera things for hire to check on how your house is leaking heat

no idea how to get hold of one - or if it might be worth it

£70 a day to hire, or buy one from £180. At that price, buying looks a better bet than hiring, especially if you can share the cost with a few neighbours.
If you're willing to settle for spot measurements instead of video, it's much cheaper, although when I bought one of those a few years ago it packed up after about 20 minutes use.

Looking like November for us too here in the sunny south east.
Beautiful, warm sunny day today. Though once the sun dips it does get cold, but not enough to kick the heating on.

Exactly the same. Was just about to do some intervals on the spin bike, but went in to the garden, realised I was being stupid and took the MTB out for an hour instead. Such a lovely day.

We put ours on at the weekend. We have underfloor heating. Normally on number 3. Currently on number 1 and its plenty warm enough. Its about time we were forced into not kicking the axse out of it

Fired up the Aga last week which keeps the house warm enough, so no need of central heating yet, and possibly there'll be no need this winter. We use Aga for cooking so when running in winter our electricity costs are low, No toaster, no electric kettle, no oven etc.. We don't have a gas supply.

Aga costs me about 8 litres of oil a day to run, expensive when oil is ~£1.00 per litre. We switch it off end of April to end of beginning of October, so about £2000 a year. Our electricity costs are low, about £3.50/day in winter and maybe £4.00/day in summer (no Aga). So, broad brush, fuel costs us around £3400 a year, much less if oil price goes back to what it was a year ago, under £60/L.

It would be nice if it went back to the price at the beginning of covid, they were almost giving it away.

I've just given in and turned mine on. WFH and I have cold hands and feet! Also needed to check all still functioning after being off for 6 months!

Had ours on a handful of times these last few days, just an hour morning & evening to take the chill off.
Alarming to see the smart meter reading jumping up, seeing it in actual monetary terms certainly helps keep it off if you don't really need it.
Blankets and warm socks for evening telly watching ^_^

I have always suffered with cold hands and feet. Since getting long Covid it has got worse (age hasn't helped).
So.......we looked at our finances and decided to throw £1K extra at the heating costs and sod it (its only the kids inheritance^_^).
I like being cosy:rolleyes:

I'm just watching ours - we're finding it too warm upstairs in an evening so the timer has been adjusted. We've noticed the cost has jumped from £15 a month for gas to £60 - bear in mind it's 3x more expensive now.

It's been a pretty mild autumn in London and it's only recently started to get colder. We have loads of thermals and warm outdoor stuff so we're using them for the moment. We'll turn on the CH for the winter when the sitting room drops to 14C first thing in the morning. It's a bit daft but we're enjoying the challenge.

Edit: maybe this is the way to go, not that I know how much electricity it uses.....(it implies 10W)
