I have 3 courses I want to join into one for tomorrow but rwgps is particularly thick with regards to the completely arbitrary timings it puts on track and course points.

Yes it is.

I put the route onto my 800 and it reckoned it would be done in 31 minutes.

When I tested out a route I'd uploaded on my Garmin 500 in Cornwall I got about 2 miles in and it told me "wrong way!" - ok, I'll turn left then, it bleeped again "wrong way!" - eh, ok, there is only left or straight on so I continued to the left - about 15 miles later after numerous twists and turns by me and NOTHING from the Garmin it bleeped "back on track" - I was almost back at the bloody campsite!

I haven't tried to follow a trail since...
If outward/inward parts of the track are close together or there are too many datapoint the old 305 gets confused I think the 500 will be similar. Sometimes also the background mapping for plotting the route doesnt tally with whats on the ground and it'll beep 'off course' and you have to ignore it and a moment later its back on course.

I always put the momentary "off course" alerts down to GPS drift or poor signal (seems to happen in forests a lot)

I've also stopped paying attention to it because frequently RWGPS will drop control points that lead you about 30 feet down a side street then back out again.

Got tomorrow's combined route merged in the end by:
  • Exporting the routes as GPX files
  • Uploading them to http://joewein.net/bike/gpxmerge/
  • Reloading them onto RWGPS
  • Adding control points around the "joins" and then dragging the route in between until it snaps back into place
I daresay when I try loading it onto the Garmin it will complain like crazy...

The 800 is similar, if you ride "through" the end point of a course at the start then it thinks you've finished the ride and you lose the pop up turn notifications. You can still see the turn arrows on the map however, so all is not lost.

That's enough technical nonsense, with @Pat "5mph" on the ride someone's guaranteed to get lost, regardless of the state of a nearby garmin...

How about meet at 11 leaving at 11:15 regardless, unless we have been informed that someone is running late? Allows a bit of flexibility given the numbers attending but with a definite departure time.

I suggest we simply set off from the meeting point in groups as soon as 10 or so people have assembled and are ready. If you arrive late and there is noone around, the first few miles to Luncarty are signposted, so you have time to catch up!

I like the suggestion of a few big regroupings. The end of Little Glenshee should be a good spot for this.

Sounds like a plan!
