So you seem to have been correct.

First real ride out on the bike yesterday and a clicking noise appeared around 20 miles in.
When we got back we had a look.

There are 2 bolts holding on the rear mech hanger bracket, took the back wheel off and we found the hanger bracket loose and only held on by one bolt. We could not get the bracket to sit flush on the frame enough to even get the other bolt threaded, it threads fine when on the bench.

He has ordered another bracket.

I wanted to ask how often is it the frame and not the bracket thats bent?

Just to follow up on this

We received the new hanger bracket but unfortunately it’s still the same.

The bracket will not sit flush against the frame to get both bolts in and tight.

Can you be sure that he ordered and received the correct hanger?

Can you just use a ruler to take a measurement across the dropouts to see if the dropouts are bent, Over Locknut dimension inside of dropout to inside of dropout should be 135mm..

Right - are the threads funked? - will the bolts thread in without the hanger?

How do you know the hanger is correct, its a 2nd hand bike, so just replacing like with like may not be correct?

if it is correct hanger and the threads aren't funked, then yes the dropout could be misaligned. You / your mate could have bought a kipper. maybe tats why it came with a botch of parts, crash damaged frame tarted up for sale.

It’s a brand new bracket we have just received., the old one is exactly the same, the bolts thread perfectly on the bench.
It’s definitely the correct hanger,we have confirmed that.

Get it checked over by LBS if DIY not working?

Just to update this thread for anyone in future.

Took bike to LBS to look at.

He checked frame hanger attachment with special tool etc and everything was absolutely spot on.

The hanger removed and new one purchased were the same, none would fit, new bolts were supplied with new bracket and both old and new bolts were identical.

LBS reckon both sets of bolts ( old and new) are not the correct length, obviously we do not know what has been done to the bike previously nor why it had an 8speed cassette fitted.

LBS fitted longer bolts to our new hanger and checked alignment etc.

All good to go.

Thanks for all replies
