In which case your question wont get answered. A 10 speed shifter will not work with an 8 speed cassette without some form of modification. But without photos everyone would be pissing in the wind as to what’s been modified.

Surely as it’s running 105 and should be running a 10spd cassette it can take that again?

A 10 speed shifter cannot work with both a 10 speed and 8 speed cassette without modification. You need to find out what’s been changed. It won’t JUST work.

What model number 105 shifter is it? Being 105 doesn’t mean it’s 10 speed, Shimano 105 came out 42 years ago. How do you know it’s not an 8 speed shifter?

You get the idea, without pictures its a waste of time even speculating on what’s been changed.

If it's running ok on 8 speed, with current shifters, it's highly unlikely it will work just switching back to a 10 speed cassette. As has been said above, the spacing will be all wrong.

The 10 speed cassette should fit if the freehub is compatible as you say. He should count the clicks on the shifter. He'll probably have to alter/replace other stuff as he discovers what else has been 'modified'.

That’s the spec which is the case apart from the cassette Is now an 8spd as in previous pic I uploaded

doesn’t add up at all to me what’s been done to it

Edit- He’s just told me he has to click twice on shifter to change gear on some gears….! The plot thickens

It must have Claris shifters fitted, I can’t see how 10 speed 105 shifters can change 8 gears, something stinks about this bike, I do hope it’s not stolen, or a heath robinson thing that’s had the 105 group set robbed off it to go on another bike that had Claris fitted, and then been sold at an extortionate price so the seller gets a 105 group set for nothing

The 105 STIs are 10 speed. The cassette fitted is 8sp. It's not shifting properly. Procure and fit a 10sp cassette (you'll need a 1mm spacer next to the flange, will fit on the freehub). Adjust and index gears. Ride on.

Thanks for confirming

Is the 1mm spacer to stop free play in the cassette once the lock ring is tightened?
I’m unsure what (if any) spacer is fitted currently to the Freehub, as it’s on an 8spd cassette just now.
