My friend has just bought this bike.

https://99spokes.com/en-GB/bikes/trek/2013/madone-2.3-h2-compact

However someone has installed an 8 speed shimano CS- HG200 cassette. They were originally built with 10sp Tiagra cassette.

Will he be able to swap back to a 10sp or 11sp cassette onto the same freehub? I presume a new chain would also be required?

The bike is fitted with Alexwheels cx28 rim with Choice hubs/freehub.

Thanks In advance

I'm not 100%, but I think they are interchangable, but may need a spacer inserted or removed. My hub is for 11 speed, but with the correct spacers I run 9 speed with no issue. With narrower cassette, spacers just need to be added so that the lock ring can tighten down correctly as the lock threads aren't very long. Then just adjust the derailleur to work correctly - assuming you have the correct speed STI.

Err what shifters is fitted with and Rd?

Someone may have swapped a claris or similar groupset onto it

It has 105 front and rear derailleur and 105 10sp shifter.

So I guess he can’t go 11sp 105 cassette as shifter is only 10 sp

No idea why someone would put 8 speed on?

Thanks

Presumably this bike was bought privately on the secondhand market?

Were the gears even working, did a test ride not show up any issues?

My only guess for the mismatch would be an unscrupulous seller who just banged on some random wheels so they could keep a good set for themselves, or it is a stolen bike that was locked by the wheels and again has had a random set of wheels fitted to sell?

Sorry for being so negative but I can't think of any other plausible reasons and unfortunately the stolen bike scenario is IMO the most likely.

He bought it privately.

The gears work perfectly with no issues. Just has an 8sp cassette fitted.

No idea of the details of the bike or seller etc . Except for what is on the bike.

As skolly says, something is not right as 10 speed is much narrower spacing

I don’t have enough knowledge about gearing to know.

I had a quick shot of it round a car park and it shifts perfectly fine.

I assume it could go back to the correct cassette if the correct adjustments were made to rear derailleur?

Photo of front shifter, and photo of rear derailleur and cassette in each gear , taken from behind please.

I don’t have that unfortunately

It’s a guy from work. Not my bike.

This is all I have
