Bloody lovely, My wife used to have a 1983 1800 Campaign. Between us we have owned 16 Golf’s over the years, most were GTi’s a couple of VR6’s and a Mk 4 V6 4 Motion. First time we have been without a Golf in the family for a very long time.

Which generation Golf was your favourite?

Mk2 I had both a standard 1985 8V and a 1989 16V RE1900 back in the day.

My wife had two 8 valve GTi’s, a 1986 and a 1988. The earlier ‘86 Jade Green three door car with Bosch mechanical injection was probably my favourite Mk2

A friend that I used to play badminton with had a Lancia delta turbo

not the full blow HF version - or whatever it was called - I think it had a lower pressure turbo or something
but certainly well fats enough and had the full Martini stripes and all that

He used to get people pulling alongside him at traffic lights and revving their engines then trying to beat him away from the lights
he never took the bait and enjoyed just pulling away slowly and watching them burn rubber up the road for no reason

One night in the pub he told me he had a bad day once and some lads in a Golf GTi were revving like mad
so he let the lights change - counted to 1 and then floored it
and passed them in nothing flat then slowed down to normal place point proved

nice looking car and great to ride in
repair bills were just silly

I had one for a few months as an interim company car, brilliant little car with a nice velour interior and a lorry sized steering wheel, very quick but from memory had terrible brakes

Many of those already mentioned but I can't believe there's not been much love for il Cavallino Rampante so far.

I love most of the 80s ones looks wise, particularly the ones with the big side strakes Testarossa and 348. I drove a 348 once though, it nearly ruined a legend! Luckily I then drove a 355 which made amends.

In the more attainable cars it's got to be the Golf Mk.2 GTI and the 205 GTI.
I owned a 1988 16V and then a 205 GTI 1.6.
If I was offered mint examples of each, I'd chew my fingers off in indecision but would probably go home in the 205. It would have to be in white, like mine though.

Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9
I don't get how the 1.6 gets so little love. Looks wise the 1.9 had the beefer alloys but that's the only difference. That apart the 1.6 was the better car. When actually put on dynos the power was almost the same and the 1.6 was freer revving and lighter, so better balanced.

I dated a girl who was 205 mad. She had three when I was seeing her, having had double that on occasion prior.

The 1.9 is the one the general public salivate over but the one GTi cognescenti go for is the mid-production 1.6, when power was upped from 105 to 115 BHP but before the later ones that had cats fitted. Nigh on as quick as the 1.9 but the engine feels revvy, lively and responsive compared to the 1.9s gutsys but sometimes lumpen feeling unit.

I also think the 15" 1.9 Speedline rims look a bit ungainly and don't suit the 205s shape as nicely s the 14" pepper pots on the 1.6.

I completely agree, the 1.6 just looks a bit more delicate

Manta Man, a special sort of German insult back in the day.

Did you wear white socks and a black leather jacket?

Think back in the day you were usually a Ford or Vauxhall man, I was the latter. Only owned one Ford, a 1.6 Capri, it was very reliable but slow and didn't really handle that well. My mate used to own a Mk2 Manta GTE, he was a really good driver, have a feeling if he drove a Capri 2.8i in that manner he'd of possibly ended up in a ditch somewhere. It's one of those cars that I wish I'd owned back in the day, along with a Mk2 Honda CRX VTEC. I work with a guy whom is a total Ford man and always drives old rough looking ones and has a slight distain regarding old Vauxhall's and Opel's, yet he would love to own an Opel Manta, but dislikes all the other GM cars from that period. Think it's a bit like Liverpool and Man U.

That's the one I had, 1990 H plate 1.6 in white.
Mine had the white front indicator lenses from the 1.9
I really must dig through my old paper photos as I don't have any electronic photo of my old cars.
