Looked even more stylish when the brown vynyl stuff at the back started cracking and peeling off.

A child of the mid-70s here.

Mini (given the long production run)
Talbot Sunbeam Lotus
Lancia Stratos
Lancia Beta Monte Carlo
Lancia 037
Lancia Delta Integrale
Lancia Delta S4 Stradale
Lotus Esprit Turbo
Opel Manta
Audi Quattro
Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500
Alfa Romeo Zagato
Toyota Celica Mk2 liftback
Honda CRX vtec (just squeaks in)

Yes, I know... There's a preponderance of 1980s cars with a race / rally pedigree in there. But that's what you get when it comes to me LOL!
A friend owned one of those Sunbeam Lotuses. A wolf in sheep's clothing. We nicknamed it Concorde. Absolutely terrifying.

I had a W-reg 2 litre job, but a less startling colour. I think it was called "Tara green" (metallic), and looked a bit like, although my wheels were better and the bodywork had no dents.

Very comfortable - would be great on today's ###tty pot-holed roads. It gave sterling service one cold winter in Yorkshire, when I had to venture out up Wharfedale in deep snow to give someone a tow!

Alas, it drank more oil than the Bertolli family.

My petrol head stage began in the seventies. Not ownership, but recognizing 'cool' cars.
The Sweeney was our go-to series for inspiration during secondary school.
The next day after each episode, you had to rattle off all the chase sequences and what cars were used.
Failure to do so meant you were pretty much ostracized, that's how fickle we were:laugh:

I'd have loved a Capri. Always had a bit of a soft spot for the Mk 3 Cortina too.
The 80s had a lot of tempting hot hatches - 205, Metro Turbo, Visa gti, the insane Charade gtti...
My first car was a rear-engined Skoda which introduced me to the dubious delights of lift-off oversteer, leaving me facing the wrong way on a Welsh roundabout and a distinct feeling of "WTAF just happened?".

We bought a Mini Metro four door for my wife. It was totally reliable, easy to fix and service, good size boot, comfy seats front and back. Remove the back seat and you have a van. Mrs was a lady painter and decorator of Bournemouth town the Metro was her wheels. She could even load the folding steps/ladder and Cary it in the Metro with the tailgate shut.
Wish we still had it 😢

I agree with the 2CV - I persuaded my Mum to get one when I passed my test

I could take that car anywhere - and did take it a few places it shouldn;t have gone

speed was a problem - my Dad had some car magazines on his waiting room and there was a review of the 2CV along with all the high performance ones they normally dealt with
the 0-60 speed was listed as "probably"

I can attest that the one we had would do 60 - unless there was a headwind
stopping it was a problem according to my Dad
I saw no problem - if you pressed the brake pedal it nearly always stopped the car
and it always did the second time you pressed it
(except that once when it took 3 goes but I didn;t mention that)

Great car

Has anyone mentioned the Jensen Interceptor yet??
great looking and the best name for any car ever
