I was thinking that I'd donate a bike in each shop and buy a replacement for the next leg of the journey.

This organisation has bike shops in a few towns. The one in Stratford helped me out on my eBay shite bike adventure (the full story is in the "Travelogues" forum) and had some really nice bikes at a reasonable price. Well worth a visit, and in fact I'm considering riding over on something to donate to them as a thank you.

Great stuff, and relatively low additional effort.
For extra value, how about (as a 'not deleted' 'reply there) a UK map with icons at each location reflecting your list. Map can be revised every so often by replacement (ie editing the post).
