But no, it wasn't anti new members, unless they were trolls.
Why was it closed?
I read someone posted in a forum there and immediate response from a regular was "who the feck are you". Maybe joking etc, dunno but i'd heard a few left.
Get similar stories about some cycling clubs, being made to feel unwelcome etc.

The Online Safety Act killed it
It was on a life support machine until they pulled the plug.
The management had effectively gone AWOL and left the keys to the bar with the regulars.
