The mtb side pretty much decamped to a more mtb orientated forum especially when ebikes came along. Each platform upgrade progressively made it worse to use. It also didn't help with a couple of out and out liars who got called out and flounced off in a huff.

Why was it closed?

I read someone posted in a forum there and immediate response from a regular was "who the feck are you". Maybe joking etc, dunno but i'd heard a few left.

Get similar stories about some cycling clubs, being made to feel unwelcome etc.

We did also get the odd new joiner who turned up generally trying to pitch you something i.e coaching services or some such, who didn't take well to being politely questioned over their motives, or people making off hand comments on a topic and being held to account for it. Usually ended with them insulting everyone on the thread and leaving abruptly.

Yeah, was definitely a case of not suffering fools gladly. The residents tended to rumble rum 'uns sooner or later. The humour tended to be understated but quite pervasive and acerbic.

I only ever read the pro bike race section on Bike Radar.
I don't know much about road racing other than watching by the roadside and on TV.
(My generation were TT only....)
I found the previews and "live" reports very informative, and meant I could keep up with results of races I couldn't watch myself.
I asked some very newbie questions and always got reasonable replies.
Some of the exchanges between longer established regulars could be robust, but that's what happens with "internet forum people".....
I miss you.

All forums/message boards are slowly dying. They're turn of the millenia tech, used by people who have been around since those days. Social media has largely replaced them.
Add to that the fact that there's always "main characters" that set the tone and you end up with quite a fragile ecosystem - lose a couple and you lose a lot of the entertainment, keep them and you end up with in-jokes from a decade ago being the board culture.

BR had the extra issue that every time they "upgraded" the software they lost a significant number of posters, and in the pro-race corner of it I inhabited debate on e.g. race tactics became sparse and stale quickly

Your not wrong they knocked me off after a spam attack and so called upgrade and deleted about 13k posts. Took me nearly a month of lobbying from a few forumites to reinstate me. Several people had the same issue, some came back some didn't, but we all had to start from scratch again.

Has French Fighter returned?

Who can forget the iconic image of Frenchie holding his quality “Contador is the greatest” cardboard sign?

He had such panache, he didn’t even cause a mass pile-up with that sign.

Frenchie, certainly, had more panache then....oohhh.....I dunno.....

I'm surprised Bike Radar forum lasted as long as it did. It used to be my go to 20 odd years ago before I found this place. I then was dual for a while and then BR changed its forum software and it became pretty much unusable...
anyway welcome on board the last of the refugees

Not the last. We left Thistle behind 😥 ...and there are a few others.
Perhaps optimistically, he's floating around in a jolly boat, somewhere in the North Atlantic (after the rusty vessel HMS BR went down), between icebergs (with no oars) and is still alive.
