I bought this box of beers in Lidl a couple of weeks ago. They’re all very nice but boy are they strong!

Six bottles (33cl) for just over £10 isn’t bad. I was in again yesterday doing some shopping and they were back in, so I got another box. 😵‍💫

I'm less keen on the Bornem, but both the Gulden Draaks and both Piraats are excellent, and still good value just for those. Lidl had slabs of each Piraat seperately a while back for an excellent price, so I did some serious stocking up

I'm a Bristolian, which Portcullis ?

It's between Royal York Crescent and the Avon Gorge hotel in Clifton Village. Great little Dawkins pub so does decent normal beer too

The yeast they use for bottle conditioning is a wine yeast so likely pretty useless for primary fermentation even if you could culture it. I'd guess they filter out their ale yeast prior to bottling and then add a v small amount of the wine yeast and maybe even some simple sugar.

In any event, really good yeast strains are pretty cheap.

Maybe there'll be just enough left in for it to keep improving then, if stored long enough ~ but that's not likely to happen .
I've noticed the lack of yeast in other, less strong bottle conditioned beers though, it used to be possible to nab a culture form Fullers 1845 and possibly St. Austell Proper Job but now, not a trace in there. As you say though, good brewing yeasts are much more readily available then in 'ye olden days' of home brewing. The plastic vials of yeast culture are superb. Note to self: I must do some home brewing again 🍺.

Okay thanks, I'll plan a visit there... 👍

There's another nice Dawkins with a reasonable selection of Belgian beer: the Queen Victoria, next door to Clifton Lido, in a back road nearer to Pembroke road. The landlady of the Portcullis used to run the QV, which was our old local.

Other Belgian beer places of note are the Beer Emporium, a basement bar in King Street which also does rather good pizzas, and the other one is the Strawberry Thief, more of a cafe bar than a pub, but a decent Belgian beer selection as well as food

I've been to the Beer Emporium, a night time Audax finished there at midnight, I remember have a very nice pint there before cycling back home.
The Strawberry Thief is very nice, quite often stop there on my cycle commute home... 👍
