Without doubt Pete Biggs is the man that rises above most of the pack when it comes to answering technical questions but there are also some on here that can and do answer most if not all of the questions being posed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I may drift back more in the direction of the OP, I think that this site manages to avoid the seriousness which afflicts a lot of specialist websites while at the same time being a good place to come to for advice etc. The other thing which never fails is that even if you want to find out something obscure which has nothing to do with cycling, somebody is guaranteed to know the answer cf my request for info about counting gadgets which I now know to be called tally counters.

Add to all that some of the resident care in the community cases (who else would have 'em?) and it really is a source of much pleasure.

That's not strictly true - you posted late on Friday evening and hubgearfreak replied fairly early yesterday.

There is never as much activity on here at the weekend as there is during 'working hours'. Obviously some people are not busy at work!

As for bonj and his stuck pedal - I'm sure that I suggested using something like a length of scaffold pipe on the pedal spanner too!

Firmly back to the OP, I use a lot of diferent, specialist forums for my differing and specialist hobbys and have done for a few Years.

This place is pretty unique, because there's no sponsorship and very subtle modding (don't wana hear the Simoncc stuf here please) it feels as if we have free reign.

Ok, alot of the serious debate goes straight over my head as a) I'm not very bright and  not particularly interested.
Some of the posts on here are exremely entertatining though and it's far from unusual for me to have a real belly laugh at some witty writing; that's a very good thing

This place does seem to get some criticism levelled at it for not being a cycling forum. For me as a newbie, I've posted a raft of cycling questions here and always had plenty of sensible solutions which have worked well so is always my first port of call for technical queries.

All of the above matches my view too.

I occasionally look back on Bike Radar and while the race section is pretty good and knowledgeable the rest of it is a bit boring. I, too, like this place for it's mix of good advice, irreverance and humour. I try and avoid the rancorous threads - I come here to relieve tension not increase it.

I think of it as being a forum for cyclists, rather than a cycling forum. Maybe a subtle distinction, but it does mean we get threads about music and fixing PCs, to take two recent examples. There's been a fair number of rides and meets arranged too. I like it.

I would hazard a guess at it being something to do with the fact that hub gears are generally considered old hat nowadays, the only place they're used is royal mail bikes - you could try asking your postie I suppose?

Oh, Bonj, Bonj, Bonj... *shakes head*

That'll be why SRAM, Shimano and Sturmey archer are launching new ones will it?

Postie won't have a clue. There will be a mechanic back at the depot who does all the maintenance.

That's one of the things I like about it. If all we ever did was talk about cycling, it would be a very dull place indeed. This place is more like a pub with lots of people with similar interests.

+ 1, as they say!

Decades ago large Pubs had different lounges and a games room, then was also the Bar, thick with smoke and people's heads bent over something on the table, often best not to look too closely. There was a snooker room, lots of barracking, and swearing and insults between people who had known each other a long time. There was also a quiet part, not often used, where you could have a (relatively) peaceful chat to someone. Elsewhere the m*t*rcylists would be discussing the intricasies of shockers, and rockers et al. The Manager was a very friendly chap, and very rarely did he intervene in any altercations, except to ask them to leave the building while they continued their argument outside.

I think it was called the Jules Verne, in Coventry, but closely ressembles the Pub in Rhythm Thief's allegory good example.

The Manager is an exceptionally generous sort of person, and he does not charge for you to use his facilites. Drinks are generally on the House.

Mickle, shouldn't you be out with the other York peeps? And I would like to see another photo of Spandex please. :shy::smile:
