See this is something that I don't understand why are people doing this kind of miles per week, years ago we lived and worked in close proximity.

Years ago, we didn't have the choices we do now. Yes, we lived & worked in close proximity, but you were limited to the jobs available in close proximity.

I was doing that sort of commuting mileage for 7 years, when I worked in Cheltenham, while living just outside Merthyr Tydfil. For me, it was worth it, because that was pretty close to the perfect employer for me.

Harking back to an earlier post of mine, I've just seen a few reviews on electric mopeds. They look like just the sort of thing I'd happily own if my circumstances were different (i.e if I lived with my partner and we could share 1 car, and if I didn't have to do the school run). 28mph, 40 miles range (larger batteries can be purchased), battery can be taken out and charged at work/home, or just plug in the charger in situ. ok you'd get wet but I wouldn't mind wearing my all in one rainsuit (which keeps me bone dry in the wettest of conditions). Can be ridden on L plates but I have full license anyway. Due to the torque of an electric motor, it's been described as slightly quicker than an equvalent L legal 50cc petrol, Seems to climb hills ok, albeit slow. The Chinese ones are around the £2k mark, but others more expesive.

The one I was looking at takes 9 hours to charge from flat, but good planning would make that a non-issue.

Certainly something I'd like to see taking off more, I know 'peds are a fairly niche market mostly for youngsters but I can see running costs of one of these versus an electric car might be favourable for more people in time

An old classic 1970’s petrol moped makes more sense, no range anxiety and about 100mpg.

I personally have zero interest in riding any sort of motorbike or scooter, electric or otherwise, not a solution for me.
