This is none specific, more of a genre- that thrash metal stuff where they just grunt and stuff. Just why?

Aye, I don't understand what compells some rock singers to sound like they've just crawled across the Serengeti with only a bottle of vinegar for sustenance. Jon Bon Jovi and Joe Elliot from Def Leppard do the same.

If you're going for the rock wailing thing you need to sound like Robert Plant, John Fogerty or Steven Tyler. Anything short of that indeed sounds like they're sat on the pan and stretching their Nuremburgs to the limit while trying to sheet a bowling ball.

Other than Hawkwind's biggest singe hit, Silver Machine, where he said he was the only one who could carry it when they did the vocal overdub of the live track. He sang lead on a coupe of others like Lost Johnny.

You beat me to it. As a result of that hit, the press wanted to talk to the singer, who was the new boy in the band at the time. I think the rest of them resented him a bit for getting in the limelight, so to speak, and dumped him at the first opportunity.

I know he’s regarded as a bit of a legend and his lyrics are good, but there is not even the hint of a tune comes out of that man’s mouth when he sings.

Always sounds like he’s in a drunken strop.

All subjective. To me he always sounds terrible. It's only acceptable on his novelty hit Subterranean Homesick Blues, which is where his career should have ended.
