Just taken the pads off and compared it to an identical new one.... that's after less than 120 miles!!! Guess skimping on pads may have been my biggest problem...... thanks for all the help... off to order some koolstop salmons..... View attachment 152336

120 miles?! Nahhh, somethings up there mate. I think pads made of actual cheese would last longer than that. and you're using the same pads on the front and they work okay?

That suggests either setup or wheel is the problem, surely?

Pretty sure it's the pads, in fact I'm certain it is. Put the new ones in, back wheel locked up no prob this morning..... as the others did when first fitted, five days ago!!! Lesson learned, don't buy two sets of pads for a fiver on eBay......
I suspect cheese would, indeed, be better.
Koolstops in the post :becool: just hope they arrive before this set wear down to nothing...... pathetic pads....

Oh, and using slightly different pads on the front....

Has your extreme pad wear been in wet weather?

The pads that came with one of my bikes (Giant escape with tektro v brakes) were ok in the dry but the first time it rained they basically dissolved into slippery black ink and were used up in a couple of hours. I lost braking power until I literally could not hold myself stationary on a hill. It made for an interesting ride to the nearest bike shop.

I'm amazed Giant would put out such a potentially lethal product for the sake of saving a couple of quid.

Yes, it has been particularly wet recently. Several commutes in torrential rain....

I would check your rim for some sort of roughness/damage. That level of wear seems excessive. I use Clarks pad without problem.

Ride an old 80s MTB with Lee Chi cantis and brake levers designed for seven fingers and ripped off from motorbike levers, pulling onto polishes chrome steel 2.125 rims
Modern cantis will seem superb

same here... and I predominantly use the back brake. They do wear down quicker than previous pads though. A bust rim on a rather new wheel altered me to that.
