...and me of my Dad's delight in taking a passer-by who'd called his dog 'Amadeus' to task: "If you're going to call your dog after a composer you really have only two options: Bach and Offenbach."

That's where the famous barcharole is from, well, Tales of Hoffmann to be pedantic. At the risk of raising the tone I can strongly recommend the Powell and Presburger film version of it. Features Robert Helpman as Hoffmann's enemy - Helpman scared the begeezus out of many of us as the Child Catcher in Chitty Chittu Bang Bang.

Yep that's what the barcarolle is from but I meant Gerard Hoffnung. Although it might be nothing to do with him...
