Just bought my annual subscription to the Adobe Photography software suite on Amazon - £62.99 instead of £119.99 :okay:

Amazon is a way of using a monopoly position, abuse of workers rights, avoidance of tax and pressure on politicians for subsidy to enrich Jeff Bezos, who is an utter [redacted].

Does anyone else follow the principle of only buying what they need and not what they see at a bargain price and thus saved £35 on something they really did not need to buy in the first place? It seems to me that the biggest savings can be made by not buying things you do not really need.

I really did not get my then teenage sister's theory that going to a discount shop selling main high street brands that did not sell in the original shop at very low prices (thus saving 75% of the original price) only to try them on at home and take them back half the time as they are not wanted. I just chose to buy something once I either grew out of something or got it ruined by some means. One out means one in. It is very much my practise for clothes buying ever since and also apply to other items too.

I think that is why when I go looking at black friday deals I am always unimpressed and can not find anything to buy. If I needed it I would have already bought it after finding a good price online or in a real store locally. I think I do not fully fit inot the modern world somehow.

I repair each tube several times before replacing it. At my age, ten tubes could be more than I will ever need. I went elsewhere and bought five tubes for £18.44. Two for use now, and three for the spares drawer.

I recently bought 10 decent canti-straddle wires as my commuter's ones were a cheap 'thin' set and the wires were breaking. £8 delivered for 10, where as, a pack of two was £5 plus postage. I'm nearly 55, and I did think these would see even me out - I'll probably lose them. I have two bikes that use straddle wires (currently my most used bikes).

Being a conscientious consumer is easier if you're of sufficient means. Ever since the P&O staffing fiasco, ive used other operators for diver calais crossings, but I've found i'm paying more for a worse (sometimes rather disappointing) service.

BUt back to internet retailing, Amazon offer competitive pricing, ease & speed of delivery, huge choice of products at all quality/price points, excellent customer service; new, refurbished and used options, it's a compelling combo for anyone, and sometimes the only affordable option.

There's also the overall convenience of Amazon; brilliant if you're seemingly busy all hours of the day.

MAybe governments will unilaterally and collectively tighten up taxation and regulatory mechanisms so the playing field is more level, but i wont hold my breath. Meanwhile, small retailers could learn some useful lessons from amazon.
