Black Friday sounds a bit biased to me.

Where's Jewish Monday or Asian Thursday?

As a white middle aged male I'm going to write to my MP about the lack of a Straight Saxon Saturday.

Does anyone else follow the principle of only buying what they need and not what they see at a bargain price and thus saved £35 on something they really did not need to buy in the first place? It seems to me that the biggest savings can be made by not buying things you do not really need.
Of course not.

If you only buy things you *need*, then you will live a very boring life.

But I don't ever buy something just because it is on sale, or otherwise cheap. I will only buy if it is something I need or *want* anyhow.

Of course I do, now where did I see that portable walrus polishing kit again?

I needed a couple of new inner tubes. The ones I was looking at are typically about £5 for one but I saw that Spa Cycles are doing ten for £30. Bargain!

Ah, but £5 p&p unless I spent another £20... I spent a while trying to work out what extra to buy before coming to my senses!

I repair each tube several times before replacing it. At my age, ten tubes could be more than I will ever need. I went elsewhere and bought five tubes for £18.44. Two for use now, and three for the spares drawer.

Actually I once needed a portable walrus polishing kit because I had a hiking stick with a carved walrus on the top and it was more comfortable to use if you kept it well polished. Can you tell me where you got it? Hopefully I can get it on a Black Friday deal.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
My tablet is 4 years old and it's running out of space and slower than a slow thing I thought I'd get that one in before @steph did ^_^

So I have treated myself to a new Samsung S9 11 inch tablet. 46% off in the black Friday sale.

I might as well spend some money before it's taken away in taxes. That's my reasoning anyway.

Mate of mine gets that, he lives at number 5 and over the road there are six flats in a block. He once had someone wanting to cut his electric off for non-payment til he took the guy across the street and showed him flat 5.

They don't always thank me when I take their parcels across to them! I took one over on Wednesday night and knocked on their door. One of the staff (it's a home for severely autistic young adults) wouldn't open the door saying "Who is it"!! I replied "I have another of your delivered to my address parcels for you". Eventually she opened the door, snatching it out of my hand then slammed the door shut!!! I suggested that they get a number 2 on their door once. The one who took their parcel off me that day said "We have one there", pointing to a brass number 2 at the very top of the door. Seriously, it was as high as you could place it, probably about 7 foot off the floor. Why didn't whoever put it there place it at eye level ffs!!🧐

Edit...I don't have a number on my door, which you'd think would make it better for me, but no, they just seem to think that my flat is the address they are looking for!! 🤔

Me either.

I also use "Black Friday" to cull e-mails that I'm subscribed to. Anyone that tries to sell me something via "Black Friday" gets unsubscribed regardless of whether they're a shop I use or a charity I support.
Great work! I'd not considered using this as a means of identifying which email subscriptions to cull; however that said I think I've unsubscribed to pretty much all the marketing rubbish once targeted at my inbox.

I've gone out of my way to isolate myself from this greasy coercive consumerism that seems to saturate modern life and think I've done a reasonable job - I don't listen to the radio nor have a TV, my email is sanitised as above, my phone number is both old and guarded enough that I very rately receive any scam / marketing calls and I run an ad-blocker so that my browsing experience is pretty much free of all the invasive, explotititve rubbish that seems to infect every page.

The only time I'm really exposed to this rubbish is passively when someone I'm with is having their brain rotted, or when I'm physically outside in the streets, shops etc.. and even then I try to isolate myself at least aurally with some appropriate tunes through the earphones.

It sounds pathetic but I think I'd be overwhelmed if I wasn't able to shut out all this horrible, opportunistc crap.

I really did not get my then teenage sister's theory that going to a discount shop selling main high street brands that did not sell in the original shop at very low prices (thus saving 75% of the original price) only to try them on at home and take them back half the time as they are not wanted. I just chose to buy something once I either grew out of something or got it ruined by some means. One out means one in. It is very much my practise for clothes buying ever since and also apply to other items too.

I think that is why when I go looking at black friday deals I am always unimpressed and can not find anything to buy. If I needed it I would have already bought it after finding a good price online or in a real store locally. I think I do not fully fit inot the modern world somehow.
I try; although find there's always a grey, subjective middle ground where the price forces the issue.

For example the MTB I bought this time last year (for about 45% of RRP) has covered about 75 miles since; although this is partially down to my own prissyness about keeping it in good nick / lack of commitment to applying frame tape.

I've also made a few ill-advised clothing purchases; although to an extent this has contributed to a bit of a learning process.

I've not made any big purchases for any of my three on/off gear-focussed interests for a while (last was the MTB), and intend to keep it that way. I would quite like a wide angle lens for the DSLR, however this would be a researched, considered, used purchase rather than an impulse buy on cost justification..

Ha - I bought the same one as you back then, and yes, it is a bit slow! It takes quite a long time to load some apps, Amazon for example. My phone is about 10 times quicker.

I nearly gave myself an excuse to buy a new tablet back in the summer when I accidentally kicked it off my sister's coffee table and across the room! I cracked the corner of the screen, but only over the black bezel, and everything still works.

I put a big memory card in the tablet but apps seem to end up back in main memory every time that they are updated.

I will stick with it for a bit longer.
