Reports just in indicate that the balloons were carrying a large banner that had an unclear message. The balloons crossed into restricted airspace, prompting the air force to take action and shoot them down. There is speculation that the balloons were launched by supporters of ex President Trump as part of a protest against election results in Alaska.
