From the plain English guide here:

"In England, the flying of flags is treated as advertisements for the purposes of the planning regime to ensure the flags do not impact on safety or amenity. Some flags require formal consent (permission) from the local planning authority, whereas others like the Union Flag do not. The detailed controls over flag flying are set out in detailed regulations (see links below)."

"Following the UK’s departure from the European Union, the flag of the European Union is no longer included in the list of flags that do not require consent."

Given that any national or county flag is permitted, along with several others like the UN, and the fact that the EU was also permitted until 2021, it's difficult to see how this is anything other than pettiness from Brexit fanatics.

The ones which are not national or country flags are all ones for organisations which the UK are currently members of.

Apparently, Northern Trains are going to re-record some of their announcements so they get tricky ones such as Slaithwaite right!

I was on one of their trains over the weekend and I think it has already started, the announcer (on a Leeds<>Nottingham route) was entirely Leeds based in accent.

I was on one of the trains many years ago just before Mytholmroyd. A passenger with a very southern accent called out (something like) "Are we coming in to Mi-though-lem-roe-yid?***" He looked shocked when the entire carriage full of local commuters started howling with laughter!

Easily solved. Take it down and put up the flag of the Council of Europe instead, of which the UK is a member, and so are almost all countries with territories in the geographical continent of Europe as seen here.

The flag of the Council of Europe looks like this:

I think most "chain" food/drink outlets are actually franchises. I would tend to assume they were unless I found out otherwise.

I just checked a few - KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Costa, Greggs, 5 Guys, Subway.

All franchises, though some may also have fully owned & managed outlets.

Yeah but I can proudly fly the flag of Lewisham Council from my flagpole without being dragged off to the tower for sedition.

Well I could, theoretically. If I had a flagpole. And if they had a flag.

They have a kind of logo thing which I guess is a bit like a flag. And I've got a broomstick that I could attach it to.

What about Ukraine flags?
