Colin, to diverge for a second... have you ever wondered how it would be to get every single 1:50,000 map of Britain or better, every 1:25,000 map, cut off the borders and stick them all together in a huge warehouse? How big would it be in 1:25,000?

(Greetings from damp and sweaty Dar es Salaam by the way!)

I've often fancied papering the walls of a room with OS maps, centring on where I live in the bit of the wall I look at most (e.g. above a desk). Might get a bit difficult in the corners, where the walls and ceiling meet.

Bing Maps has the Ordnance Survay maps available, with the gradient chevrons. :-)

http://www.bing.com/maps/ just select OS from the road drop down menu, and zoom to the right level and it'll show up. Comes in very handy.

Wow this is VERY good news. I had other links online but I often want to see a real old fashioned OS version of where I am going!

Surprisingly perhaps - no, I hadn't wondered that! ;)

The big map would be 1/25,000 of the dimensions of the UK! About 40 metres by 25 metres. I think I'll stick to my big digital map!

I've often thought about that. Laminate them to a floor and walk all over the country....

Is it possible that the map covers an area of the moors that is a plateau and therefore is fairly level which would explain the lack of cheverons?
I tried to reply to this post last night but I suppose it is possible that I only clicked Preview rather than Add Reply!

No, the North York Morks area is stuffed with very steep climbs and chevrons should be all over the place. I'll choose somewhere at random to demonstrate ... Here you go!

Oh, and my Mum did work for the OS, back in the 60's. Apparently, due to National Security, gasworks were not labelled as such.

Of course, it's just possible that the Soviets would work out what the set of large circular objects at one end of a gas pipeline were....

 Perhaps they thought the chevrons were Vulcan bomber bases too.

I came to the conclusion that the reason I couldn't find a decent map anywhere on Corfu was because the Greeks considered such information a military secret! (A Greek shopkeeper tried to sell me a map that was so bad that it didn't show his ancient village or the road it stood on!)

Does it show direction of back winds in the legend.

If it does, this sounds like the dream cycling map I have been looking for. Send it to me.

No hills and back winds.....................Heaven!!

It's changed now, but back in the 80's there were still things deliberately missing from OS maps, such as roads to military facilities - there was an entire bridge over the M5 near Bridgwater missing for this reason - the railway bridge at Puriton, going to the 'factory'.
