A question about ebay

His feedback looks fine 227 @ 100% that is all purchases no sales
I have sent him this:

The courier will need the QR code or the ebay email with the 6 digit code

I cannot release the bike with just 6 numbers !

Who is the courier, name and company please ?

What I want to avoid is someone turning up with a bit of paper with 6 numbers on expecting me to instantly release the bike.
What i cannot find out is if i enter these numbers into ebay will it immediately tell me if they are false.
I have also asked the buyer if he would like a refund and i will keep the bike. Frankly I am p***ed off now. £445.00 aint gonna
change my life, I just wanted a lovely bike to go to a good home.
If I ever do this again it will be cash on collection or nothing.

If you're not happy about anything then dont hand it over and send a refund.
In future do local pick up only, cash on collection.
Let us know how you get on. If it hasnt turned up by tea time, I'd just send a refund and end the transaction.
If its a general road bike you will be able to sell it via local clubs. Someone is always wanting a bike.

Good luck with this, but sounds like a classic scam. We've had the same with furniture we were selling for 'next to nothing' from MIL's house.. I'll send a courier, sorry no, collection in person only.

Ebay sides with the buyer. Son sent an airbag to a buyer, very clearly said airbag only no loom, and showed air bag only. Buyer then complained no loom. Son had to refund, and buyer never sent airbag back.

I sell casually on ebayy, mainly things I don't need anymore. I've sold one bike which went cash in hand, and we (me and buyer) were texting before/after the sale. I don't remember a 6 digit code/QR ever coming up at all in the sale so possibly this is a new thing though it was only a year ago I sold the bike so I probably missed it and was lucky I had an honest buyer.

Ok everyone here is the definitive answer, from the horses mouth.
I requested a call back from ebay and a very helpful lady gave me the facts.
When I enter the QR Code or 6 figure code into the ebay app it will accept it or tell me it is false immediately . . . . result.
I was also informed that because the buyer is not collecting himself (3rd party collection) he is not covered by the ebay money back guarantee . . . . result.
This means if the bike travels down south via a number of couriers and is knocked about etc the buyer cannot claim he has 'bought a dud' and ask for refund.
I was all ready to cancel this and refund because I don't want any aggro. However I am now feeling confident I am covered.
I sincerely hope the buyer is genuine and I am over reacting.

Yes hope so. whilst there are courier collect scams, there are also long distance buyers who are genuine.

I bought a bike on ebay and paid paypal and asked him to drop it to a relatives house for me I collected it months later when I was in the area. That must have been before QR collect codes etc. I assume he just marked it as collected in the old manual way.

Thank you. Your post is a 'beacon of hope' amid a sea of doubt. 👏

a third party can take money from your account even with no overdraft... they can put you in the red and your bank may charge you additionally for going into an unagreed overdraft.

I had this problem years ago with my internet provider, they'd bill me ad-hoc for extra Gigs of data allowance, put me in the red by a couple of quid, then the bank would charge me £65 for being overdrawn. It's sh!t but it can happen... and what's annoying is my bank were more than happy to let it happen, time and time gain.

Let's assume what you say is correct and standard procedure.
Bearing in mind my ebay linked account only has sufficient funds on any day to pay that days outgoings. How would that bank get the money back from me ?
p.s You can stop money being taken from your bank account with a Stop Payment order.

They could go for a CCJ and then get money taken off your wages/benefits/pension directly etc. If you owe a bank money they will get it.
Has it been collected yet? Hope its all gone to plan if yes.

I'm glad Ebay have given assurances. Always better to hear from the horse's mouth rather than from random bods on the web.

I was a little nervous selling a car through ebay nearly 20 years ago, long before the QR code security protection, but that all worked out fine and the buyer was nice as pie.

As are all the buyers I've met, I've yet to be scammed through ebay, but it makes sense to take some sensible precautions and sell and exchange goods in a manner that reduces the risks of known scams.
Particularly with the current cost of living crisis, which might tempt more people to pull a fast one.

Anyway, if the courier turns up and suddenly cannot produce the promised code, you now know exactly what the risks are.

The linked account will be in the red.

I don't think it matters what funds you have in your account. When my internet provider took their £3 for the next 3gb of data, I'd only have say 80p in my account. I contacted my bank to try to stop it happening again and the bank (halifax) claimed I'd entered an agreement with my provider to allow them to withdraw funds, which I had but I certainly didn't want them putting me in the red.

There is probably a similar 'agreement' in Ebay's or PayPal's terms and conditions.

My main gripe was if I've only got 80p I personally can't withdraw £5 from a cash point, but a third party could withdraw £5 from my account, which they did, and the bank wouldn't allow me to stop it. The only way i could was by cancelling my internet altogether with that provider.

You make it sound like a CCj is a 'fait accompli' i.e will happen around and over you leaving you defenceless. CCJ and Baliffs just two of the buzz words that are designed to intimidate and cower Joe public. You have to be notified about an oncoming CCJ and given time to organise your defence. Many people believe baliffs can force entry into your house and sell off the furniture etc. I have been around a long time and have learned that if you have 'right' on your side you do your research and then fight you should prevail.

P.S No sign or knowledge of a courier yet. Having asked, no reply from buyer re identity or nature of intended courier.
