And what use, if any, does it make of the knowledge that somebody has queried a particular registration ?The site will log every check made.

Because honest law-abiding drivers are having to pay extra to cover the costs of criminal scumbags. Of course you don't see any problem, which makes me wonder why.
I have an idea! How about councils or the DVLA ask for volunteers to walk round using hand held devices ( like 'traffic wardens' have when reading blue badges) that read car registrations, then find out if they are insured, taxed and MOT'd. Yes, I know some will say it'd be a snoopers charter, but this serious problem of uninsured cars and dangerous, not had an MOT in years vehicles isn't being checked, due to 'lack of funds to pay staff to do it'. All they'd need to do is provide the hand held devices and the volunteers would do the rest! 🤔
It could be called the Stasi, they could also check out people that didn't fit social norms and report them to authorities for a watch list just in case.
Yes, I was and I will admit to getting a ticket for parking for 6 minutes on double yellow lines while I cleaned some windows. I appealed the ticket due to me working at the time and the double yellows not being at a junction etc (they were on a cul-de-sac). The fine was cancelled.Am I correct in thinking you used to be a window cleaner?

How archaic is this I ask?!
You can report the untaxed vehicle online anonymously. You will need to state the vehicle registration number, make, model ,colour and the full address where it is parked. You can report by post by sending the details above to Enforcement Section, W070/D12, DVLA, Longview Road, Swansea, SA7 0XZ
I haven't hand written (or is that wrote? 🤔) and sent a letter for many years! Why can't we just report uninsured vehicles online? I think I might go down this route instead.
You can only report a vehicle with no MOT or insurance to the police if it is being used on a road. To make a report, you will need the vehicle's: number plate (registration number)

It is not necessary to write a letter. But you will need to contact the police for MOT/Insurance related crimes, if you want to.
Im not sure why you report VED/Tax issues differently, possibly because the power of prosecution falls with the DVLA on that matter.
That uninsured car wasn't there yesterday, which means it was being driven around, no doubt with the owner not giving a toss! Ah well, let's phone the law and hope we get some joy!!
