Was going to ask if there is an upper limit..........take it there isn’t then?
No it never had one though some shop's chip and pin machines needed the supplier to get on board.

That is true, however staff were never told and neither were the public, I have never come across a case where it has happened, the £30 limit is set as this is an acceptable loss, I have however come across a card that was cloned when a customer visited the states, they made multiple copies and hit 20/30 ATM's in Manhattan at the same time 10 days after they had returned home, bank loss, customer inconvenienced (very)

Yep my card will ask for the pin after three contactless in a row.

I really can't remember the last time I took cash out of a machine. I have even got rid of my wallet as no need for it now.
I need a wallet not just for bank cards. Bus pass, ferry card,Calmac customer number card, two membership cards, drivers license all need to be handy when wanted and if kept separately would probably forget the important one.

It happened to me in my local Lidl a few months ago! The till computer rejected my contactless payment several times. I had checked my current account balance before going out and knew that there was enough money in there to pay the bill. I got a bit flustered but the man on the checkout told me that it happens every so many contactless payments. Sure enough, the payment went through first time using chip and PIN.
Often happens to me. I have to insert my card and input PIN once every ten transactions.

Someone upthread mentioned handing their card over to pay.

I'm a stickler for not ever handing mine over. Either I can reach the machine or the retailer has to hand it to me. I was scammed 12 years ago and took to heart my bank's instruction to not hand it over.

It's only been an issue once, when a poorly trained staff member took offence. I got a nice apology and £10 voucher from their head office.

My mate had a sort of similar thing happen at the petrol station. He paid by card and the woman behind the till kept his copy of the receipt. He know's about stuff like this he was working in a bank at the time. She refused to hand it over. So still in the shop he phone the bank to cancel his card. Then phoned the police turned out she'd been keeping them and passed them on to a mate who then passed on the card numbers to be used by others. They had a nice little racket going been doing it for months it turned out.
