I enquired at my lbs about a 12-30 105 cassette, and he said he needs to check before saying yes!!! I will do it myself me thinks.
Would my Defy have a short or medium hanger?
There isnt a 105 12-30, but there is a Tiagra cassette. Many Giant bikes with Tiagra come with that cassette, so their hangers may be a bit longer than usual.

Had these put on the CX this weekend, works a treat, you'll need to have the medium 5701 shimano 105 mech to handle 32T. Changes are nice and smooth with nice close ratios between the cogs. Not tested but the Sora RD take 11-32 9 speed on spec... it may take a 10spd but I haven't checked

The C2C in a day Sportive route does though... and I suspect this is the event the OP has in mind. It also has a fair few nasty, steep little climbs at the end. I'm seriously considering investigating a 30 or 32 on the back for this year......

Is this with the standard Rival mech, or the WIFLI one?
Mrs Kes bike has an apex mech which has a much longer cage than my Rival. Hers takes the 32 rear cassette with plenty of room to spare.
It's the WiFli one, not that I realised there was so much difference between the two until I looked closely at it. CRC ask another £10 on top of the standard's price. And it weighs a whole 3g more. 3g, can that be right?

Yeah that's kind of the thing I was thinking. Although I'd like to go for a 12-32 to give slightly better cadence gaps. I know SRAM do that range in their MTB cassettes. Am I right in thinking SRAM MTB is interchangeable (for cassettes/chains) with SHIMANO even when mixing MTB/Road?!................Cheers for the help guys
