Hi

I'm doing C2C in a few months and have come to the conclusion I can't beat gravity!! I believe some people use a 32T cassette on their road bikes but from what I can see only MTB cassettes have that option.

I'll probably only need that kind of ratio once in a blue moon so don't want to spend a fortune. But conversely, doing 150 miles I don't necessarily want total bargain basement.

My current thinking is a 12-32 MTB cassette with maybe a 105 medium cage mech. I'm on a compact chain set and Tiagra shifters.

Any recommendations for specific cassettes or mechs greatly appreciated!!

Cheers

It depends on the bike, but 32T will be pushing it with a road mech.

Some will fit 30T without issues.

9 speed shifters work well with Deore MTB mechs, as for 10 speed, i dont know.

Even the pros use these ratios sometimes. If you need it, do it

Yeah that's kind of the thing I was thinking. Although I'd like to go for a 12-32 to give slightly better cadence gaps. I know SRAM do that range in their MTB cassettes. Am I right in thinking SRAM MTB is interchangeable (for cassettes/chains) with SHIMANO even when mixing MTB/Road?!

Cheers for the help guys

Yes, SRAM and Shimano cassettes are compatible with each other. SRAM tend to be more expensive that's all.

I appreciate that but I mentioned it because it's in all other respects it's a perfectly standard road bike. Oh and, me too, I'm useless on hills.

How do get on with Double Tap? Next year I plan to change the lot and I'm very tempted to go for the Force 22. Tried it briefly at the cycle show and seemed more intuitive than I expected.

Very quick adjustment for me. I've 3 bikes, 3 different systems. After a while of riding one bike exclusively I can forget and look for the bar-end friction shifters on the double-tap thingummy but, as that means grasping in thin air, I very soon remember. The system very soon gets associated with the bike, its frame, its ride.

I have a 8 speed 11-34T cassette on both my run of the mill road bike and my hybrid “tourer” I changed the working stuff to Alivio. Compact on front of road bike and a triple on the other bike. Cheap stuff, but works ok.

Can you go with a 12-30 ? 10 speed Tiagra here for £15 and just fitted one to one of my road bikes for the hills (105 compact) no issues other than adjusting the B screw .
