I quite like THIS ^_^

Well under the £1k leaving something to upgrade the wheels if needed as they appear to be the budget compromise on this bike.
That's the sort of thing I was thinking about. Don't know why I thought MTB to be honest. It's just people seem to be having so much fun on them. We've got Swinley Forest close by, the Ridgeway and Berkshire Downs are both within reasonable distance, who knows it might improve my bike handling skills. There again it might just fester in the garage like my last hardtail MTB did after the road bug bit me.

That's what MTBs are, Fun. I popped out on mine this afternoon, just 10 miles and about 1hr but I visited some of the local ponds, bashed down a few nearby descents and hammered a few flights of steps. It was short and sweet but got the heart pumping and blew away a few cobwebs in a way that 1hr on the road bike just doesn't do. I think your 2 bike plan has some merit

It is highly likely within the next few months that I will be in a position to purchase a bike around the £3000 mark. It will be a road bike. It will be used for riding as fast as my 57 year old legs can muster and for the odd Sportive. It has to be able to go upwards as I intend to head for the Alps sometime soon. So far have been to Specialized Concept Store in Newbury and looked at Tarmac SL4, but also been elsewhere and seen a Storck Sentron, Cervelo R3 (with mechanical Ultegra) and a Ritte Bosberg. As the post title says it will be the one and only time this opportunity will be open to me so I'm really looking additional suggestions. Not into steel/retro or anything like that and have perused titanium but not a fan of anything that resembles a five bar gate. So it's looking like the best carbon frame, groupset, wheel combination I could get at the price point. BTW will never do it justice, but that's not the point.

Lucky you!
If I was blessed with the choice "at your age, young man"
I would go for either Trek Domane, Cannondale Synapse, Focus Izalco Ergoride AND a mountain bike for mad fun!

There is a guy who rides in our local club who rides a red De Rosa. It really is a stunning bike and just looks special and expensive.

I fancied one of those but couldn't get one with the spec I wanted at the price the missus could stomach.

Then found the Bianchi and chuffed with it.
