Would you agree that missing splines shouldn't be an issue though?

Shouldn't be an issue providing the remaining splines are compatible with a Shimano tool. If they're not, then it will be an issue.

The Glue that binds us together.
It looks like a plasric one.chances are it will shear of when you try to undo it.better to let someone who knows what they are doing.as it may have to be hacked out. I have recently had that problem. But managed to get it out without damaging the frame. Although I did have to clean threads with a tap.

Agree with @Citius that must have been manufactured that way. But doesn't this just mean that the Shimano 20 spline tool will only bear on 16 splines/slots in the BB rather than the full 20 splines or is the OD different and it physically will not 'go in'?

Edit: (as three cross posts): Is the BB 'plastic @wisdom ?

Doesn't physically fit.gaps mean shimano tool is out by about 1/2 spline

How irritating and frustrating. I measured the 'between non adjacent splines' and 'between the splines either side of the gap' on your image and those 2 dimensions came out the same (ie as if it was manufactured 'different' but designed so a normal tool would fit). But not so in reality. Do ask the LBS how they removed it and share that.

Tapered splined socket fitted to an air impact gun removed one side.Hacksaw and chisel removed the other side.Threads recut and shimano bottom bracket fitted all for £20.well worth the money.Spent some more money on new cables and bits as well.Good service from lbs use them or lose them is my theory.

Good result there. Sorry if it seemed I was questioning your original supposition, but this is the internet after all.

Nice result.

A similar job on a car would be well north of a ton.
