I didn't want to post yet, because I don't want to jinx it, but at the same time I can't wait until the official results are confirmed, as that'll probably not come until tomorrow.

So whisper it quietly, but CCC might (MIGHT) have finished in the top half of their league...

We went into this final stage in 9th, knowing that place was safe (as long as we had four finishers), but also that we had an outside chance of coming 8th - we had to make up a three point deficit on the TFC Hulk team, but knowing they were a heavyweight team that typically crushed TTTs but struggled on hilly stages, gave us a glimmer of hope. That started to fade when we saw that they'd brought in two lighter riders for this stage (admittedly ones who had both done at least two stages for them in the past; not total ringers), but we certainly knew who it was we had to mark.

And everything seemed to go pretty much to plan. At each climb it seemed as though we had a CCC rider either just slightly ahead or behind a TFC rider, with @Whorty and @Aleman leading from the front, @Johnsop99 and @DCLane marshalling the midfield battle, and @JLaw and @LeetleGreyCells picking off riders and picking up places towards the rear of the field. Indeed it was at that point we noticed TFC had only started with 5 riders, giving us a big boost in the points race.

No-one went flying off too hard and fast - we knew that to chase Prime points was a fools errand with a number of 'almost B's' and other very light riders out there, and that proved the right decision as only two riders outside the top 7 ended up scoring any meaningful amount of bonus points. As we came to the final climb, Tony was able to pull clear and latch on to a group as he went over the top, then blasted past them on the descent, while John was flying through the field and in the end got pretty close to catching up with Carl which guaranteed that we'd get three riders in the top 20, while TFC only had one.

Final results:
@Aleman - 14th - 1:17:29
@Whorty - 18th - 1:18:53
@Johnsop99 - 19th - 1:19:08
@DCLane - 42nd - 1:25:31
@JLaw - 60th - 1:35:17
@LeetleGreyCells - 63rd - 1:37:03

We knew we had beaten TFC on points, but of course it depended upon how many other teams were in between us and them. Right now the provisional results suggest that there are two other teams - we've been given 6th, with TFC in 9th - which would put us level overall and we should also beat them in the tie-breaker. We've got a lot of crossed fingers and toes that this stays like that...

But those same results also say that the team who were two places above us, only had three finishers, which would mean they get zero points, potentially allowing us to overtake them as well, which could well place us in 7th overall out of 15!

Regardless of whether we do get that position or not, this was a fantastic performance from the team - not only this week (getting our best result this season), but also across the whole league. I feel this was a much tougher division than last year and despite the initial disappointment of losing El Capitan @Joffey from the team, we quickly found our feet and pulled some great results out of the bag. Well done all!

I could see you ahead of me with one of the guys from my team and I was thinking I could catch you. But as you said, it flattened and I got as close as I was going to - I think about 10s behind my team mate and around 15s behind you. That really didn’t seem likely when I was 1.5 minutes behind you coming off Keith Hill.

I rode to a plan. Got to the bottom of the first Fox climb with the main group and then aimed to ride at a cadence of 90-95 on each climb and a power around my FTP at 258w, and then just super tuck and rest as much as I could on the descents.

PBs on every climb and hit my targets for cadence and power on every climb except Keith Hill, where my power dropped to around 230w. I think that must have been because of a flat section as I certainly rode it as hard as the others.

Came in 51st. Made up around 10 places from the first climb up Fox and 4 of those were between Keith and the final climb up Fox.

Really enjoyed that course. I’ve been doing a coaching plan and its starting to feel like its making a difference. Cadence is much better and higher and I’m holding my power much better over a race. I was only 1 second slower up Fox the 2nd time than the 1st climb. If I can get a bit more sustained top end power, I may have a shot at further improvement.

Del,
We had very similar rides. PB’s for me on the climbs too and tuck and recover on the descents. I tended to be caught by small groups on the descents which was frustrating because no one seemed to want to work much on the flatter or less steep sections that followed before the road went up. I did try and push on a bit in those sections but a nagging voice in my head kept warning me I might blow up on the last climb.
Good to hear the training is working mate👍

The one thing that slowed me a bit was not enough groups to work with on the transitions between the hills.

I was with @BurningLegs and @Joffey for a short Cyclechat reunion between Fox and Leith Hills. Nick pulled away with another guy, but then seemed to blow up on Leith Hill and I had to ride by myself up Leith and then Box until I caught a group on Keith Hill.

So, a bit of a pain in terms of lost time, but a real positive in that I kept riding strongly, caught the group on Keith Hill and got more places back on the second Fox climb. Of course, I was hoping to catch my team mate and @Alongo - we all get that kick when we think we might reel someone in who was way ahead of us - but even though I didn’t quite make it I can’t complain about the way the race went and how I kept going to the end. I wouldn’t have done that 3 months ago.

There was only 64 finishers last night compared to 77 in #68's league - on stages like this I'd love bigger fields so there was more people to wheel suck help up climbs... :biggrin:

As we approached the last ascent I put some digs at 4w/k noting a group 25-30s in front but my group of 4 wouldn’t follow. So I went off alone. I reduced the deficit to 9s but ran out of puff.

Now you are back to fitness we should plan a Surrey ride👍

I was about a minute slower on a couple of the hills than my PBs - but I'd been out on a free ride and gone 100% up them for the PBs. Think if I'd done that last night I wouldn't have recovered. The in between bits were pretty slow because I was generally solo.

Some guys from my IRL club are in another B division and destroyed my PB times on the climbs (e.g. 6 mins on leith vs my 6,58), which is funny because I always have to wait a few minutes at the top of the climbs for them on Saturdays.... :whistle:

Well done to all my Team #23 teammates - that was a tough way to finish!

I was in a group with Tommy for most of the race - apart from when I went over the top of a climb 4 seconds ahead of the group, and then stupidly got dropped on the descent as the group passed me! That took a lot of effort to get back, but I did eventually.

I was a bit distanced on the last climb to the finish and ended up in no man's land with a rider 40 seconds ahead and a group of riders 40 seconds behind. I was really suffering by then but made it my mission NOT to get caught by the group behind and thankfully that was mission accomplished!

I know everyone fought hard for every position they could get in a very competitive field of riders.

We've had a bit of a tussle with @Del C 's WTRL team all season, and if the results are now finalised, we've managed to finish on the same points, but one place ahead of WTRL on count-back - phew that was close ^_^

You beat WTRL by 20 rider points - finish line points plus prime points for the whole season totalled together - that was the first tie-breaker it turns out. They do say every point counts, and that proves it!
