You can upgrade the Tron (performance-wise) - but you first need to fully upgrade 3 Zwift brand bikes

Oh okay, fair bit of riding to do.

I do like the training bots bike, specialized something, unlocked level 74, which is 5 levels above my current position

I could be wrong but I don't think you need to be a specific level to unlock that Halo bike - you might be getting confused with its name which is the Specialized Project 74 (nothing to do with unlocking at level 74).

To unlock it (like all of the Halo bikes except for the Tron) you need to first fully upgrade 3 Specialized bikes, and then pay 10m drops. As it happens, with the amount of miles you'd need to ride to get there, and the amount of drops needed, you'd probably be level 74 or higher anyway by the time you could get it!

No I definitely saw the bike listed in my garage and it was locked level 74

Are you sure? I've not read anywhere else about Halo bikes being level restricted, and the Tron never was either

Achieved a Level 1 upgrade on a Specialized Allez. 90km left to get Level 2. Roughly 700km left to get a full upgrade, which if I can get on the bike for 3 rides a week with a bot should get me the full set by the end of May.

My guess is I won't get a Halo until December at the earliest

Well, that must be the shortest smart trainer ride ever...

I ran out of excuses so I thought I'd finally try a paced ride on TPV.

I made sure that the trainer connected and started spinning away. Power was registering but the numbers didn't seem to correspond to how I was feeling...

Rookie error #1 - I had been so wrapped up in the technicalities that I had forgotten to warm up!

Rookie error #2 - The pace of the bunch that rode past me was too high for me to easily jump on from a cold start and I half killed myself getting into their draft. By the time I got there I had overcooked my heart and it was politely suggesting that I stop - NOW!! Over half an hour has passed and my heart rhythm is only just settling down again.

I will leave it at that for this evening but at least I know that the setup works.

Oh, actually, my HRM wasn't registering so I had to sort that out

Other waffle... I had put the legs on the trainer back to front. I hadn't noticed that it would make a difference, but it does. On the back, it doesn't really but I couldn't see the JetBlack sticker so I changed it over anyway. The front leg though has mounting holes offset from the centre so there would have been inadequate support on the RHS and a risk of toppling over! I changed that over as soon as I realised my mistake.

Aldi had fold-up caravan steps in today for £9.99. I bought one to help ease my clumsy mounts/dismounts.

The thing that really bugged me today was that the + & - buttons on the Apple TV remote did NOT control the virtual gear selection. I had to go via a menu and navigate to + & - buttons there and click on THEM. That is definitely not a good idea. I will have to find a better way of doing it because that is WAY too fiddly.

Whether you get extra XP or drops in the later stages of upgrades depends on the level of the bike - they only apply to entry level and mid-level bikes. The Pinarello Dogma F 2024 is "High End" so you get performance upgrades at each of the 4 levels (1. Aero; 2. Weight; 3. Drivetrain; 4. Aero; 5. Weight).

Seeing as a High End bike reqiures 1,600km to fully upgrade to level 5 that would be a VERY long ride to upgrade all stages at once!

The bikes you can unlock for 10m drops are the Halo Bikes (The Tron is also considered a Halo Bike but obviously is unique in being unlocked via the Everest challenge). But as well as costing 10m drops, you also first have to FULLY upgrade 3 bikes of that brand - and then the mileage for upgrading the Halo bikes themselves is much higher at each stage too
Aaah, thanks. I thought it's just the first three that make a performance difference.

Not that bothered with the exclusive halo bikes, but good to know there's eventually something to spend all of those drops on.

I assume the halo bikes are just for flexing? No performance benefits?

In terms of performance, the Tron is the fastest road bike on the flat apart from 2 of the other Halo bikes which are even faster - the Cannondale Rollerblade is a bit faster than the Tron and the Specialized Project 74 faster still. So in the longer term it may be worth upgrading the Tron at least for very flat races only (because thety're all slow climbers) - but the other Halo bikes will take so long to unlock and upgrade I'm not sure I'll ever get round to doing that!

The Pinarello Espada (my personal favourite of the Halo bikes) is a TT bike but is out-performed by the best standard TT bikes, so you'd have to be VERY dedicated to spend the time on unlocking that one!

The TPV virtual gear shift issue on Apple TV continues to irk me. There is no way that I am going to fiddle with the damn remote and try to do 7 or 8 consecutive button presses every time that I want to change gear!!

I found a post elsewhere by creator George Gilbert answering someone's request for a better way of doing it. He replied that the physical +/- buttons on the remote are not available to him to use for that. He suggested using a PlayStation, XBox or similar games controller instead.

Only a few days of free access to TPV left so I will try to get a few singlespeed freerides in and see what I think of the app in general.

I need to play with MyWhoosh and see what I think of that.

Finally, I have a 2 month free trial on Zwift which I will start after my TPV and MyWhoosh tests and a holiday in Devon.

I will make a decision about TPV then. If going with that I will buy a game controller. I might also need one for MyWhoosh?

If Zwift is the choice, no problem - a Zwift Click came with the trainer.
