An odd, but somewhat good race from my perspective. Kept up with the front group out of the pen, did briefly get detached on the slope before the tunnel (as per previous races) but this time managed to sprint my way back on. Just about stayed in touch up the hill to Trafalgar Square, but couldn't keep the power going over the top and got distanced as we headed to Pall Mall.

One other IRL rider was dropped with me, plus I saw that @Marino.g was also just up the road and falling back from the group, so we formed a trio for the next half a lap. At first we started to pull away from the riders behind us as they were scattered all over the road in dribs and drabs, but eventually they formed a larger group and started to catch us, so we all started to soft pedal (or at least I did and the other two didn't pull away from me!) until they caught up and we continued as a group of about 10 or so riders. Apart from the initial sprint to get on the back of their group, I was surprised how easy it was to ride with them - I was only putting out the sorts of power that I would usually to stay in the bunch in a D race, which was good, cause I'm not sure I could have done much more!

Obviously @Ketty has mentioned above about his equipment failure and we all sympathised (been there, done that), but from a totally selfish standpoint I was glad to have another CC'er in the group willing to push the pace! In fact I think he may have got a little frustrated by the slow pace as he launched a mega attack round the back of Harrods that got him a 10 second lead, but the power of the draft eventually brought him back after a few miles.

The pace of the group did eventually start to increase as we approached Tower Bridge and the original three of me, Marino and the IRL rider all got dropped and started the climb together. Now at this point I thought I was really struggling; my legs were feeling weak and as I was the heaviest of the group, felt sure that I was going to come in last, but I managed to gap the IRL rider and was at least able to keep Marino within sight for the first half of the climb. The gap between me and the IRL guy fluctuated between 10 and 20 seconds - every time I saw he was gaining, I put in an extra dig, which was enough to maintain or increase the gap, but despite all this surging, I didn't feel I was on for a particularly good climb time.

As the gradient eased towards the end of the climb, I managed to give a last effort which increased my gap to over a minute and I knew I was finally safe from being overtaken and finished 18th. Despite feeling that it wasn't a great climb all the way up, I was pleasantly surprised to find it that Strava had it as a PR up Keith Hill for me by 40 seconds!

Video now available (note - I started recording a few seconds late, but you don't miss any action):

The good;
The Cyclechat One-Two on the mall was executed to perfection. I tried a couple of attacks later on, getting maybe 4 seconds up the road after putting in 60 and 30second all out efforts but the group hunted me down. There’s no chance to escape out of a group doing 40+ kph ....just like in real life I guess 🥴

The bad;
Straight out the back as soon as the road headed up hill. I’d nothing left in the tank and any motivation to try and keep up was lying somewhere back on embankment.

The ugly;
Trundled up and finished 8 minutes off the leaders. Let’s hope the missing intermediate Points gets fixed though I won’t hold out much hope.
That's pretty much my ride there too :laugh:

The Irish team were egging me on to attack tonight so I felt it rude not to oblige :tongue: It was never going to work but was fun trying :boxing:

Well done everyone .... really enjoyed that league. Good competition and some excellent workouts.

Good report and spot on and now we know why @Ketty dropped back to us like a stone.

Yeah, at first I thought it was just one of those Zwift bugs where the times on the right hand side shows up with some odd numbers occasionally when I saw he was only 10 seconds ahead of us, because I had ZwiftPower's LIVE view on my phone in front of me, and that was still showing that @Ketty was riding with the front group, but it looks like its last update was just before he dropped out.

Great write up as always Steve and great to get PB’s. Also great to have @Marino.g back riding with us!

Thanks for the Companion message in race @steverob - I couldn’t reply as that wasn’t working either. Think my set up had its own bank holiday!

Another fast start in the Cat B. race saw be dropped pretty early but I did manage to ride around London with a guy called Connolly , we stayed together until half way up the climb, when he dropped me but our work together meant we caught another rider... 👍

Thanks to @mjd1988 who gave me encouragement to attempt to catch him once he was dropped but alas that never happened.

I must say thanks to all CC riders ( who have given me kudos etc through my first full season of racing, Zwiftpowers decision to upgrade me to B hasn't helped my positions ( I'd have been more competitive if I'd stayed in C ) but its pushed me out of my comfort zone !

Sorry @Whorty, I didn't see @mjd1988's earlier post or I would have jumped in C and tried to help on the flat.

As it turns out I spent the last race of the series in D in one of the most enjoyable 'races' so far on Zwift.

I have been chatting with a chap called Phil and another called Frank and tonight us three and JB just rode together like a club ride shooting the breeze on messenger. The other riders joined in a bit and the group went round to the bottom of the climb at a nice easy pace, just like a Sunday cafe ride ^_^

And then I mentioned DBR next week. Seems like all 3 are doing it and they want me to race in D. So I'm a bit at a loss as to what to do. I really enjoy riding with these guys so do I just keep racing D until Zwift Power kicks me out or do I say bugger it and just go into C. I don't know. I feel bad racing D. But then again when JB was winning every week it was a challenge and motivation to race against him. I'm probably overthinking it. And I do enjoy racing with those guys.

Anyway. Well done to everyone over the last few weeks racing IRL and cheers @IrishAl for making us aware of it! It's been a good series. Do I get a prize for getting 300 points? :whistle:

PS - I'd appreciate all your thoughts on this... D or C?

My view is to stay in D until you are kicked out like the rest of us were.
You will have more fun competing for the win and it’s obvious you’re enjoying racing with the other guys in D.
When you do go into C and I’m sure it won’t be long and It will motivate you to get better and improve.
Ketty has come along way in such a short space of time and if you keep it up you will get there as well but you need to have fun doing it.

I suppose it is about what you want to get out of it; I think you are much more likely to get better if you move up to C, but you won't know unless you try. That said if you are enjoying being in D no harm in staying in your zpower cat.

That said would it be worth trying an FTP test? Just to see if your cat is right? Because if you are holding back (even accidentally) that's a bit different.

Do you reckon that's cost you a higher place? Still very tight for the top 3 in C
No, I'd have had to win the sprint and the climb I think to have won but I was only 2nd in the sprint and we had a junior in the race and there was no way I could beat him on the climb when he's allowed in C but pushes A numbers on a climb! As such 3rd was my placing in this league which is why i was happy to have a dig even though I knew I wouldn't get away. It may have stopped Peter in 2nd getting top spot though.
