55:09 for Stage 7. Didn't really go to plan, but still somehow ended up with a decent time.

First lap was 30 seconds slower than the second, I think because I didn't get as good a draft as I was anticipating. Normally I've hung on to a group about halfway down the field (at least until the climbing starts), but on this stage everyone just flew past me early doors, leaving me around 450th out of only just over 500 after just a few miles. I can only guess that either it was a much faster set of riders taking part compared to the ones I'd done all the other stages with (midweek vs weekend riders?) or possibly because that first long straight is mainly uphill, so my extra weight puts me at a disadvantage early on compared to other courses where the start is mainly flat.

I did find myself in a small group just before the big descent, but then stupidly lost them at the bottom of the hill - I'd stopped pedalling for a few seconds to grab my water bottle, not realising that there was a small uptick towards the bottom which would take me out of the supertuck - the rest of the group were still pedalling, so started to pull ahead/away and once they'd gapped me, I couldn't pull them back, even when I tried putting out 1 w/kg more than them.

I also think I made a bit of a mess of the KOM first time round - just couldn't find a smooth rhythm and my watts were fluctuating all over the place - 350 one moment, 150 the next. Second lap I got it a lot more together and picked up the pace, especially in the latter stages, plus I got really lucky with the powerups - two feathers and an aero helmet all at exactly the right times for me to make full use of them.

If you spin up in a lower gear for 5-10secs, then back off, repeat, your average Watts will be about 20% higher:okay:

Isn't that the 'sawtooth' technique? On Zwift races they are looking out for that, and calling it out if they see it. The forum thread i read the other day suggested it was related to an Ant+ bug.

It just reminded me when SteveRob mentioned about being unable to find a rhythm on a climb. Ive seen a few competitors live where their W/kg would go up and down but would stretch a lead on me :okay:

Why have we only just realised this considering it was a big issue in Bkool YEARS ago?!
It's been an issue with Zwift for as long as it's been going on Bkool, by all accounts. It's linked more to the Trainer/pedals and Ant+ rather than the software. But for those who know about it, they have/are using the bug to 'cheat' in races. I guess if someone is so desperate to win they'll use whatever cheats are out there ... don't see the point personally, but then for us on CC we ride to get/stay fit, the racing is just an added bonus to the training :okay:

I thought the lag was due to virtual power. Speed sensors have no concept of acceleration so power calculations have to be done retrospectively by comparing previous speed with current speed. It's not so bad on a climb where there's a second or so of lag, the speed difference on zwift between twiddling and going hard is only 1-2mph, but I need to wind up for a sprint about 10 seconds before the segment starts.

I don't understand the sawtooth issue. Surely the power numbers on zwift would go back down when the data being transmitted caught up with the period of lower effort?

One thing with this "technique" is it's very easy to spot in the analysis section of Strava. Will be reviewing anyone who goes quicker than me from now on

This is what one of the riders was doing around me last night, and very frustrating it was. He'd sit on my wheel at 34 kph, then suddenly increase his watts and hit 4.5 w/kg and shoot past me ... he'd then stop pedaling and as I reached him he'd dropped to 32kph and I'd 'stick' to his wheel. I'd then slowly get back up to 34kph, he'd sit on my wheel, spurt past, rinse and repeat. Killed my average speed whilst he was doing this and stopped me from chasing down a group ahead. I'd have been better off if he'd just wheel sucked!! Looking on ZP he eventually finished 2 minutes behind me but with a much higher w/kg  Bonkers. The soonerZwift lose this sticky draft 'feature' the better.

Exactly - this is where the zwift guys are spotting the technique in use. It's glaringly obvious on Strava so I do wonder why people employ it .. but then, some people will do anything to win

p.s. Did i tell you all that my weight loss is going well, and I'm down to 65kg .... honest
