It seems it's average over the race, but like you say it's impossible to know what your average is until you finish. I was certainly way over 3.2 at times, so was having to knock it back to ensure the ave was below 3.2 which I only just managed. I think there must be a trick to it ... maybe power up the hills and hold good power on the flats then drop the power on the descents ... maybe one of the regulars can advise?
Get and stick in the draft :-)

I'm not quite to the point where I need to watch it closely, but when I get there, I'll just have to remember to turn on the garmin at race start and check it near the 20 minute mark.

Yea, I was hoping you saw my last gasp effort for what it was and wouldn't wait -- I was hurting after yesterday's workout and was fighting off leg cramps. Monte nearly caught me on that last lap -- I think he finished just 20 seconds or so back. RobT placed well too.

You seemed to be riding quite strong that first lap. Watch for J Ferres (Juanjo) . If you can pace with him you'll be in good shape. Ignore his rants in the group chat though. You've probably got enough raw power to challenge him on a flatter course.

You'll want to draft as much as you possibly can and stick with that lead group if at all possible (ie, pace with Juanjo).
They dropped me on the first climb .... seems there's a tactic going into it that I didn't know. Within 20 seconds they were gone. 2nd lap the same happened to me (I think the group you was in) but I caught and passed that group. I was better prepared for 3rd lap and held my own fine. By 4th lap though I lost concentration and once I lost the back wheel I didn't bother trying to get it back - I was also concerned I might have too high an ave w/kg so I pulled back a bit. Given I came in at 3.15 w/kg I think that turned out to be a good decision

I thought you was going strong the first two laps then you started dropping back. I was hoping you could get up to me and I could pull you along but if your legs are tired, they're tired! Hopefully next time.

I didn't see @Monte in the ride, but then it was crowded!

Think I'll stick with cat C for now and when I get a bit stronger maybe try cat B. Tonight as a B I'd have been 58th which doesn't sound as good as 13th in C race

I heard they look at the best 20 minutes rather than average over the whole race. Which means that I could just about DQ myself if I went crazy hard those first 20 min, then backed down to a crawl for the remainder.
Interesting. Worth knowing :okay:

Yea, I felt good for the first lap and was tracking my mark into the final hill when he got away. But that's better than last time on this course. But I think it was the effort during the first lap that doomed me... You zipped by and I fell into a group behind you. Your got into a group just ahead and I was in a group just behind. We reeled your group in and mixed riders a bit then started splitting up again. I was going to try and stay with you as it looked like you were going to stick in the faster group, but I could feel the cramps starting and it just wasn't going to happen.

It's certainly good to pay attention to "problem areas" as you'll see the course again if you race regularly. I think that's part of why the volcano ccw is good for me (aside from the fact that it's flat). We do 8 laps each race and I'm getting a better feel for where my strengths and weaknesses are on that course.

If you only want to watch someone race and are not involved yourself then log in to Zwift as normal; skip pairing screen then OK the confirmation. You then select your rider of choice from the usual list you see and select 'ride with'. You will then be transported to that person on the course and have 5 secs of 'pedal assist' to select that rider (or another) on right hand screen. You will then follow their race but you can jump around and watch others by clicking on their name.

Must u stay under w/kg at all time cos there no avg watts to see during the ride cos im probably a D but i would go over 2.5w/kg at times

No just race as hard as possible to win. If you go over watts/kg. You will be promoted to next level. It's really not racing if you're holding back to position well a lower cat. If you're too close to going over up your weight and race hard instead

That has to be right. I would say especially so for those using bkool trainers and getting a watts advantage over accurate trainers or PM users. Don't hang with the C's if for whatever reason/s you can ride with the B's.
