Showing 3 second average power is useful when you’re trying to keep to a certain power number. If it changes instantly you can find yourself trying to make small adjustments constantly.

But showing the power number and reporting the power number are two different things. As Andy says reporting power instantly will make it easier to react to a breakaway. That’s not the only time it’s useful though. It allows you to judge your own attacks better. It’ll be useful when you first hit a gradient, when you’re trying to maintain the same position in a pack, when you get dropped from the pack, etc etc etc.

Basically the sooner you can react to any situation the better.

When we raced last but one, you went for the sprint early, and pulled a little gap before i could react and try up my effort. I think 3s lag plus internet/server lag can be beneficial to the one rider who goes for the sprint first. Obviously a rider who has enough power and road can recoup the lost distance

Yep!

As I say it’s got to be beneficial in any situation where you want to react quickly. In fact the weaker you’re feeling the better it is you respond quickly so you lose less ground.

Dave, after you highlighted the Neo's 3 second smoothing, it was noticeable when applying power and coming off power the lag. Only issue I see is with a necessary acceleration to keep up with a rider who makes a break for it

I think that’s one of reasons why many racers dial down trainer difficulty to 15-3o%. It’s easier and quicker for a rider to respond if you are not also perhaps having to change gears. Not ideal for NEO owners.

Also, if I have understood correctly from the Neo users FB page, it’s less of an issue with the NEO2, 2’s responding quicker to input changes.

That all helps especially when you are strong rider in a race. Ofcourse i will watch my power numbers on a screen while i ride but a main thing what i watch more is my heart rate, can’t keep up certain power level i want if engine start to cough. I watch power readings usually after a ride. I have noticed that my Drivo2 trainer reacts instantly gradient changes so gives instant response, it hits my legs bit sooner before i see the percentage chages on a screen.

We are all different in our approach. I only watch HR on a long climbs and then try and keep it at or under 155. If I watch it when racing like the other night I find I hold back. My ability to breath is for me a better indicator of whether I went into the red. Average and max HR the other night were below highest readings which I optimistically take to suggest I have a bit more in the tank.

The one thing I do watch post ride is HR recovery and how quickly and smoothly HR returns to normal.

It’s more relevant when you’re doing intervals or something similar.

I was trying to hold a constant pace up the hills last night and not go into the red. Every time you kicked up to 4 w/kg I had to let you go as I couldn't match that. I was hoping we could stay together until the last descent then we could work together and maybe put some pressure on Bob. Unfortunately, once you kicked I knew I would be on my own until the end. Really enjoyed riding with you .... always nice to be with a fellow cyclechatter :okay:
I wish we had worked together in hindsight but it was only my second meet up so I need to get to know who’s who.
:okay:
