amazingly got my first 50 miler in of the year (54.7), had only popped out for 10 or 20 due to not feeling too good after too many beers last night. But when I got underway I was fine, the miles came easy.
Day was rather uninspiring - roads were dry, skies were grey, probably 5 or 6° above

here's Ladykirk church, a favourite of mine with its stone roof, built on the orders of James IV's, a church that 'neither fire nor flood could destroy'.

and then a few hours later it got dark,

Seen quite a few barn owls which is always a special moment for me - camera doesn't pick them up

(YTD 691 miles / Day 33 x 365 = 7643 - 6500 target / 365 x 33 = 103 mile lead)

Stunning last photo. That’s amazing ! 😍
It's a view well earned on a beautiful road.

I was overtaken today...twice. First time quiet B road and a young lady shouted 'morning' as she breezed by. I decided to try and keep up around 50 yards behind and did that until she turned off. Second guy overtook me on an even quieter hill and breezed past faster than I think I go on the flat! And I never saw him again 😂

I was daydreaming both times and on the second one actually went 'oh' or something similar as an involuntary reaction before the good morning.

I have concluded that I am a tootl-er and I am fine with that.

Today's picture near a commemorative bench .. with my back wheel in a hole it stood by itself nicely.

I took the day of work and joined my semi-retired mate for a cycle. It was forecast wall to wall 🌞 but whilst there was a lot of 🌞it was a pea souper (🌁) at times.

It was still nice when I got back so I went for a haircut 💇‍♂️ I might not have went a very direct route and the sun was setting by the time I got back 🙃

The most brutal ride of the year so far - whilst, according to the weather forecasts the rest of the country bathed n sunshine and blue skies, we had fog, and freezing fog at that. 0° and foggy when I set off and 20 mile later, -1 and foggy, jeez it was cold

there was a brief moment when I was higher i just popped out

but then as I started to loose height it was back into the freezer

for the last few miles the white lines helped me follow the road (and when I heard anything coming from behind I was off the bike and off the road), quite spooky at times when I could only see about one white line ahead, and going under some high voltage power lines, what a noise of crackling and buzzing, a bit intimidating

we will all have heard of wind chill, an over-rated phonominer in my opinion, but we never hear of a dampness chill, I find days like this to be the coldest, the rawest.
Just love it though ^_^
(my spelling of phonominer is so bad my spell checker or google don't know how to help)

YTD 774 miles / Day 37 x 365 = 7635 - 6500 Target / 365 x 37 = 115 mile lead

A short ride out to meet some mates at a local hotel/cafe. I suspected Id be early but intended to cycle past the cafe for a few miles. I didn't even get to the A1(M) flyover (circa 2 miles) before I changed my mind in the directness and headed straight for the cafe. After about 15mins I thought the directness had put everyone off and ordered a coffee and toasted teacake; at that moment they turned up 👍

Annoyingly I got a flat on the way back, CO2'd the tubeless tyre and almost instantly realised I'd made a school boy error and forgot to top up the sealant. So I tubed it. Delightfully the winter kit and heated gloves did a great job of keeping my fingers dextrous and it was a quick job 👌

A better social ride this week with a few extra bodies to stop slow folk being abandoned, proper non drop ride. It's just a pity a couple never stopped at the cafe. Slow, cold and cr@ppy roads play havoc with my hands but I prefer a no drop ride being 'no drop!'

I came back and gave the bike a quick clean in the back garden before taking it into the house as it was supposed to bucket this afternoon but it still dry so I could have stuck to my original plan of OS tile hunting on the gravel bike!

PS junk mail stops drip wax falling on the floor 😂

Dry, no ice but a very cold, very blustery NE wind. I decided to plot a route northward to Staveley with the aim of avoiding headwinds and having some assistance on the way home. Familiar roads took me toward Kendal and then I picked a high route through the hills that encircle the town. I was pleased to see the signs for Staveley and respite from the winds while eating a monster sausage roll. The ride home was easier across the Lyth Valley and I developed an acute internal compass navigating the winds. The Silverdale woodlands provided much appreciated shelter. 104 km with 1400 m of climbing.

Pictures crossing the Lancaster canal and the hills around Kendal.
