In typically pessimistic style the BBC told me it would rain at 10:00, the met office who are always more optimistic suggested 12:00, whereas the old chap across the way told me it would stay fine. That was all I needed to get me out toward Bowland. I took a hilly route through Abbeystead where i paused to watch a helicopter shifting bags of stone up onto the fell. It was cold riding into the sharp headwind and I was perversely pleased to start the climb of the Trough. I then took my standard route through Whitewell with its regular contingent of Barbour jackets heading to the rather nice Inn for lunch, perhaps not so nice for vegetarians or pheasants. I stopped for mine at Chipping in the company of a dozen other cyclists then headed northward via Beacon Fell and Garstang. The old chap across the way was right, it stayed fine! 83 km with 1100 m of climbing.

Pictures of bike in front of a classic oak tree and the usual shot of the Trough of Bowland.

It is a classic location and one that has featured on the ToB. It used to be the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire before the dastardly Lancastrian expansion eastward in 1974.

Having spent well over 6 hours on the bike yesterday, I just needed a gentle potter around the local countryside this afternoon. Some sunny intervals and a bit warmer than of late. Very quiet on the roads – I didn’t see a single cyclist (but perhaps they were out in the morning instead).

An easy 28km on the road bike. Finally got her up to 102km for the year. My gravel bike’s done most of the heavy lifting so far in 2025 (with 349km). But the road bike will catch up soon.

View towards Ménéac and Goméné from near Kerminy. I know I’ve posted this view before but I never tire of it. The church at Ménéac is clearly visible on the skyline between the wind turbines.

So, after a long term bout of depression which ended up with almost 4 months in bed and cant remember the last time I went on my bike, over a year ago at least, I finally felt able to do something, its only little but I am over the moon that I have managed to get out and I feel so much better for it.
I have no clue why Strava is labelling the ride of July last year though, thats a weird one to me (I had to re-pair devices and allsorts so somethings gone wrong somewhere!

It is one of my favourites. I must organise another forum ride over there again this year. We do different variations of route from Whalley to have lunch at Glasson Dock then return via Longridge.

The local Social ride for me today. I had wanted to go with their longer group but someone posted it was -3deg C and I think that scared everyone off. That was the wind chill at 7am but riding to the start it was 1deg and rising. I felt sorry for one slow rider in the group but the other now season old cyclists were pushing on and dropping him and not surprisingly after a bit he pulled off 😕
It warmed up nicely though and it was the first cafe stop of the year outside.

I had thought of going for a gravel ride when I got back but I went for a short walk instead.

One from last Wednesday:
The nice sunny morning enticed me out, but by the time I was able to go for a ride some cloud had rolled in. It was cool but not too cold and I started out with a westerly breeze.

I thought something a little longer would be good and I haven't been out to Walcot and Cressage for a while so that was my plan. I started off with the usual crossing of Lyth Hill and the bike felt pretty good from the off. There was a trail of spilled oil up the hill then a film of mud on the downhill into Condover, which made me a little wary and the covering of mud turned out to be the norm for quite a lot of the rest of the trip.

Although the setup of the bike felt like an improvement, it did feel as though something was holding me back still on the way to Atcham and by Upton Magna the back of the right knee was feeling strained again, suggesting the saddle was still a little too high. I paused to drop it very slightly at Withington, which immediately felt quicker, although wind and gradient may have been helping with that.

It did seem easier on the next few climbs at Walcot, Charlton and Uppington, allowing me to press on in a way that I'm not used to on this bike. The descent through Eaton Constantine and down to Cressage was pretty fun with the exception of being overtaken into a blind bend.

Shore Lane didn't present too much of a problem until after the initial steep climb when there seemed to be more traffic than usual. Restarting after allowing one of the vehicles through, I glanced to my left and straight into the eyes of a buzzard that was sat on the hedge only a few feet away and watching the world go by with a lazy indifference.

Decent progress was made through Cound Moor and Acton Burnell, then at Frodesley I spotted another rider ahead which encouraged me to give chase. I kept pace but couldn't catch up - still not too bad on this heavy lump of a bike though. Reaching Longnor I thought I'd experiment by dropping the saddle another couple of mm. Didn't like that and didn't go far before putting it back as it was.

I had pushed on a bit hard earlier in the ride and with the wind having shifted to the north-west I was now running out of puff. Having to stop for a couple of vehicles on the way to Ryton didn't help much either. Spotting an emu in one of the fields on the way was a surprise. I presume it was meant to have been there.

After having got along so well earlier it was frustratingly slow in the last few miles. I decided to risk the flatter way home after Condover, which was quite busy but the queue for the temporary lights wasn't too bad and didn't hold me up.

35.3 miles at 13.3 mph average. Strava claims 1526 feet of climbing so it's not that flat. Great to get out. I had hoped to get another couple of rides in this weekend but it wasn't to be. Won't have a chance this coming week.

Isn't the idea of a 'social' ride that riders do not get dropped!
