I have never been in that area, his it public roads or an estate?, is there lots of tarmaced roads to do ?
I'm slowly doing all the roads up in Edinburgh

It’s a private estate but accessible of course through our right of responsible access. It’s a mix of tarmac and offroad. The John Muir Way uses part of it. It’s one of several estates around the city that provide largely traffic free tracks and roads, other include Hopetoun, Dundas, Mortonhall and Cammo.

a taste of summer, well not really it was only +5, but after recent rides this felt warm, dry roads means no bike cleaning tonight, and that is a big plus

oh look someone without a brain in a tipper, never known that beofre
pity I hadn't been over the border in England that would have won him a 3 point prize
but never mind I seen him coming and predicted crap driving
edit - have taken that down as I will try and take the video of been left hooked by a tipper to the police, it will be a waste of time as Police Scotland are not remotely interest in such thing, but I should at least try

but back to the joys of blue skies, warm weather and dry roads

It’s been a horrible week here weather-wise .. following Storm Eowyn, then Storm Herminia, we also had to cope with Storm Ivo. Brittany’s badly flooded (worst flooding in Rennes for 40 years) and Redon is almost cut-off – the Vilaine river is a whopping 5 metres above its normal level.

There’s been a red weather warning here since Monday – I’d no idea red warnings could last as long as 4 days. I’ve had some ground water in my hallway but nothing major. The ground simply can’t absorb any more water so some of it decided to enter my house.

Dragged myself out for a ride this afternoon (first ride of the week) and cycled down the Voie Verte from Mauron to about halfway between Lézonnet and Grancastel. Fields alongside the Doueff and Yvel are submerged and the Yvel was running very fast north of Loyat. I noticed that the GR37 north of the Lac au Duc is now an underwater footpath.

Lots of debris on the Voie Verte because of the high winds. A few trees had fallen in the week since I last rode on it – but they’ve all been chain-sawed and carted off, leaving lots of smaller branches to negotiate. I’d wondered if I could ride down to the canal this weekend on my road bike – but no chance, it’ll have to be on Katie-Mae, my gravel bike who simply ignores problems – she bumps over branches and takes a childish delight in going straight through large puddles.

Finished the ride and then did my first supermarket shop of the year – I hate doing it but I was fast running out of essentials (bread flour, light bulbs and coffee). In and out in less than 20 minutes which is as good as it gets – and I can eat this evening.

Another wonderful evening to be out, the dry roads continue

still need to concentrate, where the sun never shines little traps of water ice can lie as surprise traps, I know this one from old so I was keeping the speed down on the descent, water runs off the field, washes any road salt away and freezes solid, and as its just after a bend you don't see it until you're on it

So that was it for January for me, I 'm sort of happy with 636 miles, good to be slightly in front (by 84 miles) of my yearly target, January can be so unkind weatherise, it could have easily just been 1 or 200 hundred. But feel a bit defeated, that has been a huge effort and I don't see how I can keep that up for an entire year  .

and this is my road coverage as per end of january - doesn't look like 636 miles does it, round and round the same old roafds - need to spread my wings a bit and get up to Edinburgh

First time for a few weeks, I was able to join the Wheelers' Saturday social ride. I rode out to join the route in reverse and meet them somewhere near Cullompton. Ken was coming the other way on his own. He turned for a chat and we continued together until we saw the peloton heading towards us, whereupon we swung round to tag on to the back. I started chatting to people, but soon realised they were riding through and off, so made my way up the line and back down the inside. Matt had a puncture in the lanes, which allowed us a breather. Through and off continued whenever the hills and the roads allowed, so we had a good workout. The fast group were already at the cafe when we arrived - in fact they were ready to leave, so we grabbed the table. I was about to leave after coffee and cake when the remnants of the slow group arrived, saying they'd lost a few on the way.

I left with 66km on the clock, to ride back through the town and home, following my nose. I got lost in the new housing developments on the edge of town, but eventually found my way past the Met Office. Then it was the back way towards Whimple and the Whimple by-pass (local joke) to Talaton and Feniton. I dragged myself up the hill towards Gittisham and home for a total of 103km. Longest ride this year so far.

In typically pessimistic style the BBC told me it would rain at 10:00, the met office who are always more optimistic suggested 12:00, whereas the old chap across the way told me it would stay fine. That was all I needed to get me out toward Bowland. I took a hilly route through Abbeystead where i paused to watch a helicopter shifting bags of stone up onto the fell. It was cold riding into the sharp headwind and I was perversely pleased to start the climb of the Trough. I then took my standard route through Whitewell with its regular contingent of Barbour jackets heading to the rather nice Inn for lunch, perhaps not so nice for vegetarians or pheasants. I stopped for mine at Chipping in the company of a dozen other cyclists then headed northward via Beacon Fell and Garstang. The old chap across the way was right, it stayed fine! 83 km with 1100 m of climbing.

Pictures of bike in front of a wonderful oak tree and the usual shot of the Trough of Bowland.
