A meeting cancelled and a dry morning so got out for an unexpected ride today. Dry but also cool with a moderate westerly so headed north to mitigate the time riding into it. Picked my way along the rough line of the Lancaster to Kendal canal and the M6 to Killington of services fame. There is a sizeable lake behind the services and a pleasant route behind for riding. Certainly the facility for cyclists is more pleasant than that used by motorists. Then I continued north to Fox’s Pulpit, where the Quaker George Fox led an open air service on top of a substantial hill. Lots of skylark and meadow pipit in evidence. Lunch was in Kirby Lonsdale before the clouds closed in again for a few rainy spots. 100 km with 1100 m of climbing.

Pictures are of Lancaster canal being swamped by trees, Killington lake, Howgills and the descent from Fox’s Pulpit.

I managed my longest ride today :notworthy: A shade under 30 miles and I finished feeling pretty good, except for my legs which were shot
The vital statistics were: 29.52 miles / 2:06:26 moving time / 14.04mph / 1,499ft of climbing
The map looks like this - Sorry, no pictures (maybe next time) ^_^

Yes, the ride was supposed to be a smidge over 50km but I missed a turning which resulted in it being less  I did think about a lap around the block before I finished, which would have pushed it above 50km, but couldn't persuade my legs to go past my driveway ^_^

Next time

A Friday afternoon ride that picked up the coast path where I left off the other evening.

So from the Warren car park I headed left, or east and I had it all to myself.

The sedum on the rocks was magnificent, but there were plenty of flowers out beside, even though they were a little beaten by yesterday’s rain and wind.

Possibly the slowest I’ve ridden this stretch but I was in no hurry.

There is a piece of old rusty tin that I always pick up, expecting an adder to be there…. A slow worm and a sloughed skin of something or other.

I joined the road just after the tea house and continued on to Battisborough, the last 3 miles home were wet.

The text message from my mother in law said “are you out and about on your bike today….?”

She’s having a dinner party tonight (that we’re not invited to!) and the dining table was reluctant to extend.

Off I went in breezy sunshine to Holbeton, the verdant hedges collapsed after all the rain and wind.

There’s a new housing project in the tiny twee village of Holbeton, eco housing. Word was that there were some affordable homes, the most expensive is £1.1M the cheapest £600k. Maybe they make the money first….?

So after a wrestling match with the table I came out the winner. I was also used as a sofa by Bo the golden retriever!

Back out and I headed through the hamlet of Ford….. then the hurricane and monsoon hit!

It was bloody freezing!

5 yucky miles, and true to form it was all blue skies once home!

Our usual Saturday group ride started well.

But shortly after arriving at the cafe the sun umbrellas became
:cloud_with_rain:
umbrellas.
The bit round Blatherwycke was torrential and we arrived too early for our usual pub opening, so we headed to the next.

Fortunately I got a warm sunny weather window for the 8miles cycle home.

Well I said it was our regular ride but it wasn’t exactly due to a road closure for resurfacing works.

When my alarm went off at 5:30 this morning I simply couldn't garner much enthusiasm for the 60 mile ride I'd planned. Of indeed any of the other 3 rides I'd also planned.
In the end I opted for a much shorter ride sticking to the local Surrey Hills, 20 miles in all.
Up Box Hill with lots of overtaking, but still 2 minutes slower than my PB; the lingering effects of my 2021 bout of Covid; but a fairly consistent speed with a sprint at the end.

Stopped at the viewpoint to take some photos, then carried along the top before descending into Leatherhead and sheltering from a shower under a canopy before winding my way the last couple of miles home; by which time the children were up, so I was presented with wine & chocolate - result!

After a lovely walk on the moors this morning
IMG_2365.jpeg

I went out on my bike with the purpose of getting a half barrel for my mother in law.
I’d bought on from a bloke in Ermington via facebook marketplace a couple of years ago so I went to see if he was still in the high risk game of garden ornamentation. Turns out he isn’t.

Never mind.

I did the last 1/3 of the pine ridge road and came back via Bull and Bear.

16 sunny miles.

Lovely ride into York today with my two friends Martin & Gaynor. We took a bridleway out of York where a footbridge over a beck was closed and fenced off, Martin and I successfully balanced on a large pipe and crossed the beck, Gaynor wasn’t so successful and fell in!
She was a bit stinky on the way home so we made her ride at the back🤣
33.5 miles, lovely spin out.
