Pitifully low mileages, so compacted into 4 days. Been attempting to drive/ride the commute on as many different things (in a row) as possible. Previous best was 23, as of today I'm at 26 and target is 31. Scraping the bottom of the barrel now, pulling old bikes out of the garage, getting them somewhere near useable and just winging it.

Monday:
2.84 miles in. Was a bit nervous about this, as not ridden this bike for maybe 4 years. It actually was spot on, didn't try and set any records but it was super smooth, the gear changes were reasonable (if not rushed) and it was surprisingly quiet

...and 8.45 miles home, as it was a nice day and had gained confidence in the bike...

Tuesday was the turn of another old relic, think I bought this off the scrap man round the back. The tyres are good and the brakes seemed to work, so with a bit of trepidation, off we went.
3.57 miles in, rode superbly. The only noise was from the tyres on the road, and the gear changes were good. Decent sized frame helped.
A bit of a go round the city walls, absolutely lovely at any time, at circa 5.30am even more so. King Charles Tower in the photo, supposedly where Charlie watched the battle of Rowton Moor...

...and 3.7 miles home.

Wednesday 3.57 miles in, on a dented top tube Dawes Horizon. Another hastily 'done up' bike to get me there and back. Rode far better than expected, the chain is horrifically rusty so I just sprayed penetrating stuff on it the night before, and used a cap full of finest 10/40 engine oil to lubricate it. A tad small for me but a good ride.

3.7 miles home, a truly appalling shot of I don't really know what, but it's the river Dee just off Sealand Road in Chester.

Thurs, 2.89 miles in on my old favourite Scott CR1. This was a lash up as it'd already been raided for some bits after an incident riding it a couple of years ago. The front wheel is off my Basso Champion, the front brake is a very basic Shimano one and the brake pads were mostly off that 1970s/80s Peugeot! I do love the old bikes, but these modern ones are so much nicer to ride

4.84 miles coming home, glorious day for it. Cormorant in the background.

Today: 3.02 miles in and a real challenge. Bought this bike for a fiver yesterday, pumped the tyres up, tightened the bearings and it was off. It's an oddball thing really, made in South Wales. My God, it was horrific to ride! Back wheel buckled, I'd over done the wheel bearings, the frame is too small and the gears were extremely hit and miss...

nc_ohc=zSQAkFaZpFgAX8wF-rV&_nc_ht=scontent.fman4-1.jpg

4.77 miles home. I didn't even try and attempt Dee Hills Climb (sort of side of the Grosvenor park) as I think it would have killed me, so I carried it up the steps by St John's church (the original cathedral in Chester, iirc) then rode it down the roads back.

I stopped at my local bike shop and dropped it in there to true the rear wheel, adjust the bearings and tweak the gears. By the time they'd looked at it they said the front wheel bearings were so tight the wheel didn't really move and they said they weren't surprised it'd been a nightmare to ride!

Anyhow, not exactly mega mileage, but hard work at times and it's quite (strangely) enjoyable riding on a wing and a prayer with untested bikes. Today I managed to buy a well priced Trek Madone 2.1, so Tuesday's ride in should be a good one.

1st time this year without arm or legwarmers !
just under 40 miles in total to one of my goto cafes , the Kabin at Tywcross where there were a lot of cycling groups but i was billy no mates but i enjoy riding on my own and only stopped for maybe 20 mins to sup my coffee and cake then back home .
I was considering doing a sportive next weekend but my knee and shoulder are playing up so i dont think doing a good 20 miles to the start, 80 miles , then riding back is such a good idea atm .

Well, the weather was so nice today that I took my road bike off the trainer and went for a ride on it .

I did a couple of solid hills on it including a long constant 17% hill from Ermington to Westlake.

Orange tip and brimstone butterfly on the wing. Whitethroats, stonechat, skylarks and Chiffchaff in the hedges.

Rounding a bend there was a buzzard picking on a rabbit carcass, but not for long….

Early Purple Orchids, Common Twayblade and Star of Bethlehem were the standout flowers amongst many.

18 miles.

A fabulous ride Herne Bay, Ramsgate, Sandwich home via Canterbury. I had a Famous Five moment as I whizzed along a country lane and waved at a tractor driver in the field with a grin on my face. The tractor driver I suspect thought why is a pound shop Gandalf riding a bike and waving at me.

If you didn’t get out on a ride in southern England today then you better be dead or in jaaaaaiiiill (TM The Simpsons).

Biggest ride of the year so far and it might stay that way, but did a 126k loop up and around the North Wessex Downs. You could really hurt yourself on the accumulated inclines around there but I’d planned a route that didn‘t include some of the brutes. Just over 1.1km of up in the end, which is a bit less than the average elevation per km locally.

I stopped at about 80k for a snack and a sit at the Sandham Memorial Chapel. You’ll see it signed off the A34 but it’s always a peaceful place to spend a few minutes.

Great ride today 50 miles across the new forest to beaulieu...

Weather was getting a bit warm for a northerner in thermal top and tights!

Riding on flat roads is a bit of a novelty too.

Rode with a couple of riders on fast bikes for several miles bet they didn't appreciate it!!

Approx 50 miles

Bucklers Hard! 🤭

How were the roads in the NF today? TBH I avoid it in the summer as the traffic increases and standard of driving doesn’t. Some locals aren’t exactly in love with cyclists either, although things seem to have calmed down in recent years.

Just a quick blast tonight to test the summer steed after getting the rear dropout straightened by LBS following getting it mysteriously and worryingly twisted way out of true.

Thoroughly enjoyable 26km at 15mph, including an ascent of the pavé of Swiss Hill just two seconds off a PB.

A pretty poor month weather wise for bicycle rides but the ebike had a busy Friday evening and Saturday morning.

Friday saw its first evening shopping trip of the year – a cross town visit to Sainsburys with the normal highlight, the decent of showground hill, somewhat foiled by a very slow articulated lorry at times reaching 10mph - suppose I could have overtaken but was expecting it to pick up speed. It finally did, after coming to a complete stop because of a not very high speed hump, when the showground 20mph limited road, partly concrete panels, turned into a normal tarmac 30 mph road.

The return had a pannier deployed with the heavy stuff in it, occurred to me that the D lock on the otherside of the bike provides a degree of compensating balancing. A couple of roads were annoyingly busy for the time of the evening and at the first I resorted to a rarely used cycle route crossing to get across.

Saturday morning and the normal ride to Waitrose was varied by nipping into M&S which turned out to be a complete waste of time with the food hall devoid of what I was looking for. Quickly abandoned the horribly busy southbound A61 for a previously never used cycle route through a foot tunnel under the railway to rejoin a normal route to Waitrose.

App voucher reduced price bags of cereal and oranges along with the free copy of the Times in the rucksack and then to Asda where the bike stands were pretty well occupied. Thereafter a pretty full rucksack along a route that uses a level footbridge over the railway on which recently a barrier has been removed along with the red circled no cycling signs – it has been a signed cycle route for years but the always ignored cyclists dismount signs remain :banghead:

Back home checked the local availabilty of a bike suitable torque wrench (an Ebay purchase had been refunded by the seller before despatching as they had rejected them as being faulty). Back along the same route initially, now somewhat more busy and the almost compulsory stop at a right turn was lengthy - a van driver turning right into the road I was dozing on kindly waved me out:thumbsup:

Onwards and another ignored dismount sign, this time for as short straight path that links two cul-de-sacs together.
Shared path across the Stray interrupted by a wait for a crossing to turn against the A59.
stray1.jpg

Only then to join that road after it had turned east to reach Halfords. Quite appalling cycle stands too narrow to get the pedals between so put the bike on the unoccupied outer end only for it to persist in sliding along the stand scratching the top tube. Torque wrench acquired with British Cycling discount almost bringing it down to Wiggles price.

A couple of roads not cycled on lead to a crossroads with the A661 knowing that there was a pedestrian crossing nearby but remarkably straight across without stopping. This ride brought me almost to a large M&S Simply Food; with standing traffic from traffic lights and the shortest way to the bike stands being contrary to the one way system I wheeled the bike the rest of the way. Left with a fullish rucksack and just a few quid left on the latest Topcashbank sourced gift voucher.

My route away took me along a cycle route that Komoot refuses to recognise, presumably because it partly uses a private road, but clearly marked as permissible.
Parsons Intake.jpg

Further on I halted to help a couple of lost walkers trying to find the local ringway footpath route, nominally meant to be around the urban area but which has been encroached on somewhat in places.

We were out from work, last night, for curry and beer but I was fairly sensible and so no hangover this morning, plus the warmest day of the year so far, meant I had time for a short ride, before my plans for the rest of the day.

Shorts were comfortably needed and despite overnight rain, I took the carbon as I was only heading around the edge of the Town.

Not a lot to report, busy along the river towpath and through the Quarry, with people enjoying the warm morning.

Mud under the bridge at Meole though, which was a bit slithery on the thin tyres, so the Brook must have been out there at some stage this week.

12.87 miles at 12.8 mph avg, so bang on an hour. About an hour after I got back, the heavens opened with an absolute deluge. The hint of better weather didn’t last long!
