This afternoons ride was a bit like last Sundays to start with. A northerly wind meant I reluctantly headed east to Knaresborough to cross the River Nidd thinking it could not be as rammed as last Sunday. Well there were no crowds on the pavements but then there was no scooter rally today. There still was standing traffic up the hill from High Bridge so the big loop around the town again– amazingly for a Bank Holiday I navigated Waterside a bit slow at times but nevertheless never actually coming to a stop.

Variance came with heading east from Farnham to Ferrensby where I paused for a snack at the bench by the duck pond, occupancy today just two ducks, that has the added bonuses of both a litter bin nearby and a BT Wifi signal.

Continued east through Arkendale and over a busy but free moving A1(M) - a good sign as it meant the parallel A168 would be its normal pretty quiet self. Quickly off that A road and the clouds begun to make the sunshine now one of sunny intervals. Chatted to a pair of horse riders as I passed to reassure the horses I was not going to attack them, and on via a lane
Towards Upper Dunf.jpg

to Upper Dunsforth for bike at the sign photo.

South through Great Ouseburn to Thorpe Underwood to then head west with the expected crossing of the B6265 onto a narrow lane to cut through to that to Whixley. Transpired the narrow lane is being fenced off to make it cycles only but currently is totally closed. So a brief unexpected northerly ride to navigate an improved junction for left turning traffic to head south through Whixley, across the A59 after a brief pause to Cattal where a sunny bench beckoned for a snack break Little did I know a few hours later showered I would be back there by car picking a dropped SD card off the ground under the bench.

West through Hunsingore to recross the A1(M) which was crawling northbound. South on the A168 before switching to the adjacent bridleway to make for a simpler turn west to reach North Deighton and then Spofforth. Then the lumpy road that NCN67 follows to climb in two steps through Follifoot. On the second of those the Garmin threw up some weird messages and by the time I had sorted it out the top of the climb had arrived; maybe Garmin need to come up with a permanent climb distraction setting. That was then followed by a long doze waiting to join the A658. Soon off that A road and west over the Rudding lump only for the lights at the junction with the A61 to go red almost as I got to them.

Another sunny bench beckoned in Pannal for a snack and then the climbs of Spring Lane and upto Rossett Green; varying this route to head down grade on the UCI circuit to a bike at the sign photo at Valley Gardens.

I’ve not been feeling well this week, but finally felt more human today and the headache had gone, so I headed out into the beautiful Good Friday sunshine. It was cold when I set off and I was probably 1 layer short really, but knew it would warm up enough that I’d be ok after a few miles and that was the case.

A close shave within the first mile didn’t set the mood off great, car overtaking me and a chap pulls left of out a side road without looking, straight into the path of it, not sure how they missed each other 🤷‍♂️

I then followed the cycle paths to Heathgates and Sundorne, joining the old canal path to Uffington. Encountered a chap with a dog, brazenly relieving himself along the path in full view, would have found a tree to disappear behind myself!

Next was the climb up to Upton Magna and East Haughmond, then the nice fast descent to Somerwood and Rodington Heath, where for a change I continued on and around to Walcot.

The lane up to Withington and back to Upton Magna was nice with the breeze behind me, but had to stop quickly after a buzzy thing flew inside my helmet. Not sure what it was but loud enough to suggest it may have been something stingy like!

I continued to Berwick Wharf and Atcham, where paddle boarders were getting ready to use the River Severn for some fun. Then I took the lanes to Cross Houses and Berrington, past the hall to King St, Betton Abbots and home.

A lovely morning to be out, 23.04 miles at 12.2mph avg

Two uninteresting and pictorally-vacuous rides..

Tuesday night: On the fence about a pre-pub ride due to the immensely unpleasant saddle sore on my left cheek; tipped over the edge by the beautiful evening weather. Bit chilly but off I went on the faithful Routier down the tow path in my inappropriate poloneck and wooly hat. The sun had brought out a lot of folk but they were negotiated without incident. Into town and I finally stopped on cornmarket to remove some layers.. hat in thigh pockets of combats but nowhere for my jumper other than on my back with the arms over my shoulders and tied over my chest like a boat-knob.

Wiggled through town a bit then back out East via the Iffley road. Some things probably happened but they were of insufficient consequence for me to remember them now; other than seeing a rat scuttle across the cycle path at some point. Later at the pub the local CC arrived; all riding placcy apart from one chap on a nice looking steel Mercian - who retrospectively should have got some recognition for that.

On to today.. Almost got out on the Boardman after giving it a little TLC last night; however didn't really feel like smashing it thanks to carb-withdrawl malaise, achey legs from 10ish miles walked yesterday and the desire to go t'shops. Grabbed the Fuji as usual; first stop being the bottle bank with two pannier bags' worth of Peroni bottles emptied down their insatiable furry portholes..

Onward via the poorly-surfaced gated road and into the town called malice via the suprisingly (mostly) not-cack segregated cycle path. Minced around town for a bit before nipping into Sainsburys - thought I'd missed closing being a bank holiday but thought I'd check anyway and was pleasantly surprised. Once inside I was disappointed by the lack of reduced bargains; this made up for largely by getting a smile from a sublimely hot girl who rumbled my staring at her like I'd been hit in the head with a rock..

Spoils bagged and I was back outside unlocking the bike when it got another compliment - this time from a middle-aged woman who was unlocking her BSO from the rack. My reply was that it's all good as long as it does the job, and that it's great to see someone else doing the shopping on two wheels

Back to the village of the damned and a brief stop at the co-op yielded a bit of reduced veg and a four pack of Heiniken, since all of the decent bottled lagers were, unsurprisingly out of stock.

Ultimately a shade under 23.5 miles and around 900ft at a leisurely 10.6mph and 116bpm for a bit under 1100kcal burned. Very happy to get out, everyone seemed in a great mood because of the sun / holiday and it was great just to be floating about amongst it with some vague sense of purpose

I think nearly every interaction had with anyone today was overhwhelmingly happy and positive - just shows what the sun does to our national consciousness.. the only exception was the bloke in a mini pulling out of a junction across me (not dangerously, just close enough to be concerning / irritating) - again though the sun won as his soft-top was down; allowing him to hear me calling a bellend from about three feet away
Nice write up!
Did you get her number!

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Got up this morning feeling grotty so it took a few hours of vegging and coffee to get moving and really had to force myself to get out but it was too nice to just sit inside so i headed towards Market Bosworth where i decided i was close enough to the planned cake stop for tomorrows club ride so i pootled over and checked it out as i needed to test the quality of the cake ;)
I then set the garmin to take me home for a total of 41 miles this morning through the lumpy lanes and sunshine .

My first ride for 6 months
OA and a mental workpace drove me off it late last year, no great desire to start again tbh.
Fault on my ebike last week while my son was using it forced me to play with it and an inevitable test ride, which turned into a 12 mile amble on my old route.
Thoroughly enjoyed it, suns out, lambs in the fields, the first flowering of rapeseed fields, birds twittering, particually skylarks which are a joy...
Just might get back on it more again

It was ones of my mate's Birthday and the really strong rider was meeting us at the hotel Cafe. So I spun on the front to there (TR says 95rpm). In addition to my strong mate we were joined by a few others for 🥂 I let my strong mate take the front and decided to rest my legs for an upcoming TT (I probably should have done that earlier and perhaps yesterday's 105miles wasn't a good idea 😂). My cadence fell a bit after that as Lol, I had to coast often.

We usually stop also at a country pub and today was no exception. The exception was the unexpected beer garden use. It was supposed to cloud over but it delightfully just got sunnier and warmer so the beer garden it was 🍻 What a change from a feel like 1deg C start to a 26degC feel like temperature in the beer garden 🌞

The usual route, a meander down to Oundle and the hotel cafe and back to Fotheringhay for the pub 🍻

I rode down to the start of the club social ride nice and early this morning. Four of us set off. We picked up three more along the route. It was a fairly relaxed amble until we hit the old A30, whereupon the chaingang started, continuing for a few miles until everyone was knackered. We then stopped to wait for the stragglers who'd dropped off. After a coffee and chinwag on the quay (the various club groups finish there), I pedalled home on a southerly route through Aylesbeare and Westhill. 118km in total.

Finally got out on the Boardman. As much as I dislike placcy bikes in principle, typically the bike won me over with its smooth ride, sharp handling and constant goading to go faster. It certainly feels, and indeed is quicker than my other bikes but I'm not sure why - the total mass, rotating mass, rolling resistance, frame stiffness, aero...?

It wasn't all roses however; the gearing vexed me a bit as I needed to be all over both chainrings to make up for my lack of fitness, while the upshift on the FD from the Tiagra shifters is pretty heavy and I struggle to an extent with the throw / reach. My feet evidently didn't appreciate being so constrained by the pedals and were numbing towards the end of the ride, while my neck and back complained a little but will survive.

Anyway, an unremarkable 22ish miles and 1200ft in the afternoon sun at around 13.7mph and 133bpm for 1000kcal burned. Meant to take the phone but forgot; so yet again no pics!

Different one for me today. We were visiting my sister in law for a few hours - a 2 hour drive north to near Tregaron in mid Wales. My wife suggested that rather than sitting there listening to the two of them natter, maybe I should bring my bike, so I did.

I had planned out a route on Strava, but was told by my nephew, who was there doing some work on the house for his Mam that a chunk of what I had planned was gravel (Not really obvious from Strava), so maybe with a road bike I should try something else

Also turned out I had forgotten to bring my cycling shoes, so was using the flat side of the pedals with my trainers.

But a pleasant 15 mile ride around Tregaron bog, couple of hills that got up to 15%, but not too long, and quite a strong wind heading down towards Tregaron, but that meant a tail wind for most of the last 3-4 miles.

Saturday warmed up after a dull cold start and I headed north to Killinghall and up the A61 to Ripon; the set of reverse curves on the approach to Englands eighth smallest city are known as Daffodil bends – today was one of those rare days that it made sense.
Dafodil bends.jpg

Rejoined the A61 to turn off at the top of Hutton Bank to reach the bike by sign photo at Wath - paused in the village for a snack break.
Wath_sign.jpg

Through Melmerby and across the A61 to come to a halt at the traffic light controlled single track bridge over the A1(M), which was noticeably quieter than yesterday. Waving at the detector did not cause them to change and neither did reaching for the water bottle which normally causes a green light to appear. Then I realised just behind me the horse riders push button was in reach. Nothing happened then a green light. Through Rainton and Cundall to Milby for a further snack break. On setting off I slowed to rejoin the road to allow a tandem pass.

1680985144174.png

Through Boroughbridge and Minskip for another snack at Staveley. On restarting the Garmin suggested battery saver mode - I ignore it. Knaresborough was in contrast to the last two visits a touch quiet and a touch luckily passed through non stop.

Normal slog up the A59 hill and along the Starbeck branch route home.
42.16 miles 1883ft climbed 13.9 mph avg and the Garmin had 5% battery left.
