I finally made it up to Dartmoor for a ride. It was a lovely dry day too!

From Nattor I went to Ditsworthy, then up toward Drizzlecombe and over by the old Eylesbarrow tin mine. At Princetown I stopped at Fox Tor café for a bacon butty.
I then retraced my steps for half a mile and went down the widow maker track to Burrator. Through Sheepstor and up the hill back to the van.

13 miles. Lovely!

What a location and what great pics!

Indoor ride this afternoon; bit more effort and a decent distance now the knee issues seem to be sorted(hopefully!).

The stats;

After a windy ebike ride to town and a headwind battle return yesterday (5.09 miles 430ft elevation)
Station Parade.jpg

Sats bike accommdation.jpg

today seemed fated to be the same as there was some wind about as I headed east to Lidl at Knaresborough. An unexpected halt was needed at the Knaresborough end of the Beryl Burton cycleway as the gate was unusually shut.
BB gate.jpg

Waterside was relatively quite where it is typically is busy but busier than normal where it is normally quite. Deciding to torture the ebike up Castle Ings I was hampered by pedestrians wandering across the foot of the climb.
An unsignalled turning in the mist of a set of temporary lights resulted into an easy turn on the upper part of climb of Briggate.

Opted for the route through north Knaresborough for the return and after a snooze at the traffic lights on the narrow bridge over the railway another lengthy pause at a mini roundabout whilst the driver of the car with right of way decided to move forward so allowing another car from another leg to then move and then I could. That did however lead to a 15 minute unbroken ride with daffodils enlivening the climb away from Knaresborough
Daffs.jpg

and then on the Starbeck branch I ended up following a poorly MTB making a strange clicking noise.
A few spots of very light rain fell and I passed a 1967 Morris Minor seemingly in mint showroom condition before a lengthy snooze awaiting to cross the A61, which was the final pause homewards. It was during that I realised their had been no wind of note on the return ride.
12.65 miles with 909ft of elevation

Another Sunday, another ride. Dark again because of the clocks going forward, and also raining, but I went out anyway, maybe I need my head examined .

Out to Great Wittley, following on to Stourport, then Hartlebury, Elmbridge, Droitwich and back via the back lanes.

Had an idiot come out from my right and forcing me to brake at Great Wittley, they got lucky their number plate isn't readable in my camera footage because of the rain, or they would have been reported. Just before Cutnall Green someone decided to trim the hedge with what looked like a brand new BMW
20230326_221640.jpg

And to complete today's collection of idiots a kid in an electric scooter nearly drove the thing under a passing car, and a land rover with a trailer squized past me at the entrance of a roundabout. I have good footage of the kid going into a house and the number plate of the land rover, so both are getting reported.

No photos today, other than my bar cam footage, as the day looked rather miserable. I had a great ride despite the idiots.

A week after riding a 300, I knew I'd suffer a bit round a hilly 200. But needs must (it's friend Sarah's event, so obliged to ride). So a very early start (clocks had just gone back) and I set off with the crowd, dropping off the fast group when my legs started aching, made it over Exmoor at a steady pace. It was good to see old friends along the way. Some rode (as I subsequently found out) whom I failed to see at all. Managed to finish in under 12hrs.

Another Monday and still feeling the need to break out of all my familiar routines and routes, while having little energy to do much about it.

Taking inspiration from a reference by @briantrumpet to Clifton Cathedral I knew my day could only be improved by a bit of high class brutalism, and I could let the train do most of the work.

I timed things to get one of the old repurposed GWR HSTs which has a kind of guards van.

Here's the ticket hall at Temple Meads.

Bristol is a good place to cycle or walk these days, compared to Taunton. Here's Park Street and the Wills Building. I ignored the show-offs flying up the hill.
20230327_113322.jpg

The cathedral was moving. Although not religious I lit candles to the memory of our daughters and mother-in-law.

Thank you Brian.

A quick coffee and toastie at Christ Church. Highly recommended.

Then over the suspension bridge.

Straight on and through the grounds of Ashton Court.

Back along the waterside and onto the train home.

9 miles cycled. Mood improved enormously.

Correction: the cathedral wasn't moving. I was moved.

I always find photos of Bristol fascinating as I was born there but barely know the city, apart from a vague idea that it has a harbour and a big bridge.

BTM is astonishingly beautiful.

I cycle commuted to work in Taunton for nearly a year. I still ride the same bike too.

A couple of gentle rides today, either side of a trip to a nearby town in the van.

Not in any sense noteworthy, other than it wasn’t raining and it wasn’t very windy – and it’s hard to think of a day in March that hasn’t featured gales and/or heavy showers.

I’ve managed to maintain my record of cycling every day this year – 86 days cycled/86. Anyone else keeping up a 100% record?

The northern entrance to Guilliers (on the D13 – a busy road that I mostly avoid but it’s a Monday and no-one seems to work here on Mondays – and it’ll be even quieter here tomorrow as the whole country will be on strike).

Thanks. Good to see the cathedral. My other connection is that my gran & great uncle owned the shop at the top of Park Street (just to the right of the Wills tower in your photo) until WW2... all the windows got blown out when a bomb fell just outside. Oh, and a car fell in a hole.

I cycle commuted to work in Taunton for nearly a year. I still ride the same bike too.

I once worked from an office in Temple Meads and was taken on a tour of the whole station, including the old station building (big), mail sorting area (huge) and the amazing spaces under the platforms and tracks ( bigger than huge). Wish I had taken photos.

I find Bristol much more interesting than Bath - but then I'd rather visit a Victorian workshop than a stately home.

Taunton is still here.:hello:

Day 5 of 7 off work (including the weekend) and the weather actually fit for a proper bike ride once it had warmed up. Opted for the same kit as a week last Sunday that used the thinest leg warmers but today a long sleeve rather than shorter sleeve merino wool baselayer top.
The Defy shorn of its mudguards west along Penny Pot Lane was noticably rattle free but a touch of excessive chain noise – um… when did I last oil it? The wind was that light the local wind farm was on strike.
After close to half an hour turned south on the B6451 pausing at Bland Hill before tackling the easier climb of Norwood Edge; that being relative, I have only managed it non-stop twice and todays light northerly was of no assistance so paused before tackling the uppermost part and then down the steeper climb in my fastest time although that was still comparatively slow.
Norwood Edge down.jpg

Lindley Wood reservoir was looking pretty full as I clambered away from the viaduct over the reservoir passing a very smelly manhole cover in the road to the summit at Farnley. Then down to the bike at the sign of Otley
Otley.jpg

Paused by the weir for a snack, no Salmon jumping it today.
Otley weir.jpg

Back street route through Otley was potentially fated by a road closure but there was just enough room to get the bike through and then east on the A659 to Pool.
Pool.jpg

Then took the A658 which at 2pm was pretty quite – occasional flurry of passing vehicles all nicely distanced so the options to turn off were ignored for its largely nice smooth surface which only noticeably deteriorated once across the railway line for the short length to the A61. Quickly off that A road and just reached Burn Bridge in time for a group of horse riders to pause to give me right of way despite the traffic calmed road arrangement; good timing given the climb ahead.
BB Horses].jpg

Stopped at the top of the climb for another snack before tackling that to Rossett Green and then further on along a cycle route Komoot refuses to recognise. 26.72 miles with 1916ft of climbing 12.4mph avg.

The sun was out today and with the forecast looking rubbish for the rest of the week, I took the opportunity to get an after work ride in. However, don’t let the sunshine fool you, as it was really cold out and the South Easterly wind had a bite to it that meant plenty of layers were needed.

I was heading to Dad’s and so followed my usual route through Meole village, note to self of road closures there on the 5th and 9th April. I then followed the main road to Hook a Gate and Annscroft, into the wind that wasn’t as strong as recently, at least.

I then turned East to Exfords Green, where 4 goats were out in the road by the farm, one of which darted across in front of a car that was overtaking me, slowly thankfully and I then took it very steady passing between them, in case they bolted!

I called in on dad for half an hour and then set back out, enjoying the fact that it wasn’t dark. Thank goodness the lighter evenings are now here and will only get better over the next couple of months.

I followed the usual route back via Gonsal, Condover and Betton Abbots. Had to avoid 2 canisters of Nitrous Oxide, which had been discarded into the cycle lane near home. Rather topical at the moment 🫤

14.91 miles at 13.0mph avg. I can’t remember the last time I broke the 13 barrier on this bike, very rarely happens, makes a difference when the wind isn’t howling!
