Mallorca day 2 - 130km of sunshine, blue skies and smooth roads.

From the hotel in Playa de Muro down to Sencelles then on to do the climb of the Puig de Randa. Lunch there then back to the hotel via Montuiri. Slightly downhill with a tailwind nearly all the way home meant we were averaging nearly 30mph in the bunch with a maximum recorded of 41.9mph

Anyway here's some photos of the day.

Did a 27 mile hill training with the other half today, she has made some big improvements lately and i feel there is a lot more to come, she just needed a bit of a push to get that last bit of effort out of her, she did have a bit of a rant at me she does not like being shouted at, but she thanked me when we got home, more PRs on Strava for her. we had a nice cuppa at High Beech.

Stealth bomber styling may not to be everyone's taste but I like it. Model is Mach 720

Day 2 of hols in Scotland dawned with intermittent showers, blue skies out of one window, dark grey out of another and winds around half of yesterday's. I ummed and arhed over what to wear. yesterday had been a touch warmer when the sun was not out than today was and with the weather also slightly wet, I played it safe and went back to the winter kit so the sun came out . I also knew we had a long day planned given I had planned it and there was a chance we would be coming back quite late into the afternoon/early evening and spring kit might just not be warm enough (it would not have been!):cold:.

So we set out with a wonderful tailwind (garmin kindly informing my virtual partner had completed the course prior to me evening starting it!:cursing: not sure what happened there, but thankfully I had a real partner to cycle with.) and the first 2 hours sailed by literally. I'm not a fast cyclist so for the first 2 hours of today for me to have averaged 16mph including a long climb meant I must have been having a really good morning - wonder what was actually in that teriyaki sauce last night from wagamama's? At times we out did the tailwind and I got the odd comment/complaint about a headwind from my OH. I threatened to slow down back to my normal pace, which quickly shut him up!

Today's route had 2 * cat 4 climbs and 2 * cat 3 climbs on it and a lot of climbing and I knew we had a big climb coming at the 80km mark, so it was time to make sure I paced myself a touch better...

We had hoped to find one of the very many cafes that should have been open for lunch and a hot drink, but it was not to be. Lunch needed to happen before Pitlochry and the only various café points along the way where lunch needed to be (I have to take steroids at certain times during the day and timing put us a the café at Killicrankie at lunchtime), but sadly it does not open until 1st April - lesson learnt - flask will go with us next time.

After a quick sporran hunt in Pitlochry (they are hard blighters to shoot out of season you know ) we headed off to continue following National Cycle Route 7... only the bridge is out at the moment and the diversion is pedestrians only... we rode on and pretended to be pedestrians right the way up to the dam.. at which point life became more interesting and weightlifting became the order of the day....

They were letting rather a lot of water through the dam today....

Looking back the way we had come.

NCR7 has the wonderful habit, like all national cycle routes, of finding the most scenic and out of way back lanes possible and whilst the lanes were lovely with some wonderful patches of light, they have this habit of bypassing anything that could possibly have a café and a hot drink and that was how the rest of the day was to continue. Heading towards Aberfoyle we had turned back into the headwind and it brought our speeds tumbling down. One of two words were muttered under my breath about a certain cycling partner of mine who seems totally unaffected by headwinds, but continues to sit on my back wheel sitting bolt upright looking board with the low speeds and today was no exception. I was not impressed or amused and mutterings were muttered but to no avail. He did not come forward to help :cursing:... At a layby I stopped - thinking I would say something, but instead he announced he needed another call of nature and handed my his bike to hold... I think this was when I realised just how tired I was: holding his bike I was using one hand to drink from my water bottle and needed to scratch my nose... the rest was more like a scene from a comedy sketch. I let go of his bike to scratch my nose whilst continuing to drink and for some reason I expected the bike to remain upright . It didn't, just as an oncoming car arrived on the scene. All I could do was laugh... this would have worked on the touring bikes because the panniers would have held the bikes up against my bike and, well it doesn't work with road bikes ... and I still have that really big climb ahead of me...

Actually the climb was fine... I told him to get on with it had his pace and we would meet at the turn off for Schiehallion Road... As I joined him I asked if he had been waiting long - no was his reply... then he followed it up with only 3 and half minutes... so yes... I'm a slow climber, but I did it all without stopping unlike my OH! Oh and we both got to see a weasel!

IMG_0273.JPG

The weather turned a lot colder around Schiehallion, as expected and when we hit that headwind, we had to cycle down hill, down the Schiehallion hill - that is really not playing fair! Back to the holiday home was also a long drag into a nasty headwind, an the weather 'broke' :rain: less than a couple of miles from base.

http://www.strava.com/activities/121557149 112km (just under 70 miles) with 1362m of climbing (just under 4500 feet)

Ah the Burway, I've only cycled it once, and that was down thankfully. What a great road. In fact *rummage rummage* I recorded it and put it on youtube, fast forward to 2 mins 30 secs for the beginning of the descent, and hold onto you hats.

And heal up fast Justiffa, your injury made me go weak at the knees.

I swear I'd rather go up there twice than down once. Brave riding!

This is one of my favourite threads but looks like i wont be able to contribute any time soon bcos i busted my achilles tendon completely and am now under long rehab. They're saying minimum recovery in 2 months, full recovery in 4-6 months.

Popped it on monday, went in for surgery on wednesday and now hobbling at home trying my best not to go crazy.

43 mile club ride in the sun, lovely day short sleeve top and bibshorts, nice easy ride out to St Albans for a bit of breakfast, we had to divide the ride into 2 groups as there were so many of us, i went of with the so called faster ride and my other half went with the so called slower ride, they arrived at the stop less than 2 minutes behind us, after breakfast the ride split we took the option to come home as we were supposed to be seeing one of my daughters, the other half of the riders went on to do a few more miles, we got back towards home and i thought i deserved a pint, so of to the pub.

Bit of an eventful one for me, wanted to increase my ride length k's gradually over the 54kish longest I had done so far so selected a loop of 35k and 360 metres climbing and thought I'd do a couple of laps of that. I just fitted a couple of Bonty R3 Racelites that a colleague of my partner sold me for £15 the pair, hardly any wear on them and was looking forward to spinning them up.

So I had gone around Exeter Airport, the road crosses over the A30 on a bridge and then drops down before a climb up through Aylesbeare, I changed up to the big ring because I had been easy spinning a slight slope to recover before attacking the climb...

Disaster struck.. The front mech had moved the chain most of the way up but it got stuck halfway, leaving me no crank movement at all, not forward or back, just chain jammed fast.. Frantic changing of the front gear didn't sort anything so freewheeling I started to brake to move to the side of the road and was slowing and began to clip out of my left pedal, unfortunately I stuck my heel in the back wheel, it locked and I skidded to a halt over about 5m..whereupon, still clipped in because my left foot couldn't move (and with the drama I had completely forgotten the right one) fell into the road.. Luckily no traffic oncoming (and no witnesses)....

So my lovely new (to me) tyre on the rear now had worn off all of the tread for 60-70mm down to the canvas...

I was about 10k from home so decided, after an inspection revealed no tube poking through, to limp homewards a bit gently...

I got home safely, changed my tyre to a worn spare one I had, 27k done.. So I headed out again to do a longer second circuit..

Pretty standard ride otherwise.

Oh, and GWS Justiffa
