Having avoided going out yesterday in horrible weather I ventured out out for what was planned as a 24 mile out and back to York from Wetherby evolved into a 33.5 mile out and back ride taking in roads and villages that I'd not explored before so Tockwith, Cattal and Kirk Hammerton received a visit on the outward leg.

The Ouse had bust its banks, no surprise there, and the oft flooded Kings Arms was receiving lots of attention from locals and tourists looking at it from the Bridge on Low Ousegate.

A nice relaxing return leg punctuated by a brief photo stop to capture the Holgate Windmill peering over the rooftops in Acomb saw me get through thirty three miles in two and a half hours of pedalling time.

The Kings Arms. It has a board mounted inside which has each flood level mark on it. The furniture is demountable and when there's the threat of a
flood it is taken upstairs to join the beer which I believe is permanently kept upstair out of harms way. The railings are normally just above waist height.

Holgate Windmill. It's perched on a roundabout in the middle of a housing estate.

Headed out in glorious :sun:for the 1st time in goodness knows how long, for a 2 part ride.

I decided to take the hilly route to my mum and dad's. Mum is home from hospital for a week during her battle against cancer and so my time spent there is very precious at the moment.

It was out along the cycle paths, avoiding all the people walking in them, down to meole brace. I usually take the underpass there but it was full of water about 6 ft deep from the river!! I therefore had to deviate a little but then climbed up into bayston hill and wound my way up Lyth hill.

I knew there would be big puddles up there and boy were they deep! I managed to feather the pedals enough to get through and avoid getting my feet wet!

I paused for a moment at the top to look at the stunning clear view and then dropped down to exfords green and along to mum and dad's.

I had a nice couple of hours talking to mum and she was quite good and chatty today which was great

I then headed back home via a different route. I went via ryton and then condover and on towards Atcham. I passed my 1st fallen tree along there and I couldn't take my usual route to atcham because the road was closed due to the river Severn being in it. So I had to detour via chilton farm and then along the old A5 into atcham where it was like a lake as Fridays rain has meant the Severn has peaked again today

I then continued onto berwick wharf and the back road to upton magna and Uffington. Fallen tree number 2 along there.

It was then the usual route back along the old canal path, fallen tree number 3 along there which I had to ride underneath!

The final stint was through the estate, up the road where I had seen them sorting what I thought was 1 fallen tree on bbc midlands today last week. Turns out it was 3 fallen trees, with the sawn off stumps the only remnants now.

24.81 miles at 10.9 avg mph. Was happy with that as the avg was at 9.5 when I got to mum and dad's.

Down to the in-laws in Cornwall went on a club ride with the Penzance Wheelers, went from Helston to Penzance to meet the group, started out a little chilly, bit of a frost but was OK to ride on, met up with the group and headed of towards Hayle along the coast road to St Just then through to Sennen for a cafe stop after my cake went to Lands End then dropped down to Mousehole then through Newlyn and back to . Penzance, left the group and headed back to Helston.

The coast road was stunning, what a day for it.

Up near Shelve, the scenery becomes a lot more wild looking.

As high as I'm going on the first climb and looking up at The Stiperstones. Time for lunch.

On my way again and looking towards my next destination - The Long Mynd.

Just past the cattle grid on the climb up from the Ratlinghope side.

Up at the summit - Pole Bank and looking back to the Stiperstones.

Top of the Burway and time to get a portrait of the bike, same as I've done with the other one.

Descending the Burway. Isn't it a long way down?

Pausing for a bit of traffic to come up. This gives an idea of how wide (or not) the Burway is.

Wow love those pics.

The Glue that binds us together.
55 mile club ride today, the Sun was out beautiful day, was a good turnout so we had to split up into two groups, i went of with the faster group so we had a good ride finding plenty of hills, arrived at the morning stop, had a full English breakfast, then the second group joined us, had plenty of time to digest my breaky before setting of for the second part of the ride, again the group split into two half opting to go back and the other half of to Matching Green, where we had a nice pint in the pub, or rather we sat in the garden with the Sun shinning on us, was another good ride, even had time to take a pic, apparently the oldest wooden church in the country, or so we were told. For a wooden church there seems to be a lot of bricks, the wooden bit in the photo did not come out very well.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Last night I was telling @gavgav that I intended to go and do a metric century today. While I was getting ready and checking the local travel reports the situation in the north of the county looked a bit iffy (still floods and trees down on some of the minor roads apparently), so I decided to opt for a route I was confident wouldn't be flooded and headed for the hills again.

Today's route was out towards Pontesbury and Minsterley before climbing up over the Stiperstones (first time I've ridden up here ) via Snailbeach and Stiperstones village. Next I headed down to The Bridges and Ratlinghope before climbing onto the Long Mynd and up to Pole Bank. Finally I headed back down the Burway to Church Stretton and back via Acton Burnell and Condover.

After Crossing Lyth Hill I was on the A49 for a very short section and needed to turn right to Exfords Green. I had streams of traffic coming up behind me but one driver noticed me looking back and guessed I wanted the junction so held back to let me turn right. Thankyou Mondeo driver!:bravo:

Being a Sunday the traffic was light around Pontesbury and Minsterley - this was very nice as the two villages have more than their fair share of fast and agressive drivers. No trouble today though which was nice.

There were quite a few other riders about, most being friendly:thumbsup:, and on the section after Minsterley I had my only overtake of the day.

The climb up to Snailbeach and Stiperstones is a long and relatively steep one. I deliberately selected my lowest gear to keep my legs as fresh as possible for the later climbs and was very glad that I had. On the approach to The Bog (yes that really is a place name) a group of mountain bikers turned on to the road in front of me. I caught them quite quickly and was considering how to pass them (as they were taking up the whole road) when they turned off again. Further up the climb they emerged on to the road again but were much more spread out this time and obviously struggling with the steepness of the climb. I got a comment of "you're not mearly muddy enough" when overtaking the one group.

They caught up at the top where I'd stopped to have lunch and take in the view of the Stiperstones (the actual stones this time). A couple of Red Kites were hunting nearby which was a fabulous sight. I've taken a photo but all you can tell from that is that it's a bird of some sort.

I moved on again as I was getting cold stood still and headed down to The Bridges - they seemed to be doing a good trade at The Horseshoes:thumbsup: (Aston Martin parked outside - very nice) before heading on the climb up onto the Long Mynd from the Ratlinghope side. There seemed to be an off road driving event going on which I couldn't see but could hear.

My legs were feeling it a bit now so the climb to Pole Bank was slow but steady. Great views today as it was fairly clear and the snow capped mountains of Snowdonia were visible in the far distance.

Heading back down the Burway I thought I'd get hassled by a BMW that was following, but instead left them behind. Not everyone likes this road with its unguarded sheer drop. I shouldn't be surprised really - we usually get 1 person a year who manages to drive off the edge.

I had the wind behind me now so the trip back was nice and swift. I realised that my mileage was going to be less than 40, so took the longer route (plus a turn round the village) to get it up to a nice round figure.^_^

40.1 miles at 10.8 mph average, which I know isn't fast but given the amount of climbing today I'm pretty happy with that.

The Stiperstones Inn (and tourist information centre) at Stiperstones. These are old mining villages - the area being notable for lead mining right back to the Roman age.

View attachment 38245
Looking back down the valley I've just climbed. They aren't clear in the image but from here Stiperstones, Snailbeach and Minsterley were visible.

Decided the wind and rain had eased enough today to try my Three Counties Ride. Still meant the climb up Lundale was into the wind, but it was manageable.

20140216c.jpg

Plenty of snow on the tops, crossed from Country Durham to Cumbria, and then a sharp, fast descent to Brough before the climb to Tan Hill (now assisted by the wind).
20140216d.jpg

Finally made it to Tan Hill, only to find the place over-whelmed with car trippers, so contented myself with a beer and a bag of crisps before heading off into the distance.
20140216e.jpg

Some icy roads to be negotiated before the off-road section across Sleighthome moor (to avoid an excursion for tired legs up Arkengarthdale).
20140216f.jpg

All-in-all, not a bad 65km out - 1450m of climbing done. Hope summer is on it's way...

70 miles with @toptom out to Waddesden & back. Glorious sunshine, quiet B roads and country lanes, a little windy in places but nothing like it has been. A coffee stop in Tring and Toms hill out of Aldbury on the way home. Plenty of cyclists out today making the most of the weather. One cyclist we overtook didn't much like it and gave it his best shot to re-overtake us, so it was time for some silly games and we absolutely flew past him 30 seconds later and was never to be seen again. All fun and games and good to stretch the legs!
