A few days late as I have been recovering

Little bit of a race report from the RTTC National Hill Climb Championships

To finish up my racing season, I entered the National Hill Climb Championship which was to take place on The Stang in Yorkshire, running North from Langthwaite up toward Barnard Castle.

As it was quite a long way from Manchester, I travelled up on Thursday evening to stay with family. On the Friday we drove out to the climb and I did 3 reps, just to figure it out, work out some pacing strategy etc. It is a nice climb, starting at about 16-18% for the 1st 0.75 miles, then undulating for a mile then a 10-12% kick for the last half a mile. In my practice runs my times were at around 11 minutes, which was not particularly quick, but I knew I could go a lot faster on race day as I did the 3 reps at about 40W below my expected race power. To finish up I had lunch in the CB inn, in Langthwaite (the location that the event was using as race HQ), I had a monster burger with home made chutney and chips!

Saturday I had a conservative bash about the lanes local to my parents house, 30 miles @ 19 mph average, encountering only 2 sets of traffic lights, one set being temporary and getting through the others on green, blissful!

Sunday was the big day, we drove out to arrive around 11:45, my start time was set for ~13:30. My aunt and cousin went into the pub for some soup, my mum sat in the car and my dad lifted all my stuff out of the car where I set up on the turbo and started warming up, at which point @totallyfixed and @dr_pink came over and started chatting to me. Shortly after, my family, bar my dad walked up the climb to wait for me passing, I got off the turbo, my dad put it in the car, I put my race wheel in and set off for a little road warm up while he walked up the climb. Almost immediately after getting off the turbo I was frozen solid and soaked through! I saw one of the female riders crying and looking very cold which did not fill me with confidence, I headed off to warm up on a small hill nearby until 5 minutes before my start then went to the start.

Given the conditions (absolutely horrible, I actually like climbing in bad weather but this was something else...), I had decided to smash it up the 1st 0.75 miles, then recover on the rolling section, using the wind assist to allow me some recovery, then to explode up the top section. The starter held me up and counted me down, at the count of 2 I started my Garmin and stood up, then the starter said, GO and shouted good luck as I set off! I immediately started sprinting up the hill, but something was wrong, my rear wheel was slipping lots, to the point one slip nearly had me off, so I had to sit down and grind up. I figured I would be moving a bit slower, but not risking a major stall. I got across the cattle grid at 0.5 mile into the climb and stood up and pushed over the top of the steep section. Whacked it in the big ring and absolutely caned it over the rolling sections in the 53:12 at ~35 mph, this section was okay, although the strong winds did blow me around a bit on the road but I managed to stay safe. For one of the intermediate lumps I dropped back to the small chainring and at the summit tried to shift into the big ring again and the chain just didn't go, so I shifted back down and up again, this time the chain went up, I sighed a sigh of relief and picked up some good speed once again. I could see my minute man up ahead and I was gaining on him rapidly. I passed him just before hitting the final 0.5 mile ramp. At this point I seemed to slow and he came back alongside, I was really starting to suffer at this point because I had not let off as much in the rolling sections as planned, but his near re-overtake spurred me on and I stood up and sprinted away from him, putting another 30 seconds into him over the last half a mile and crossing the finish line in a time of 09:32.7 and in 53rd place which was a top 1/3rd finish (180 riders entered, 161 started).

Distance: 2.3 miles, Elevation Gain: ~850-870 ft, Average Gradient: ~6.5% (the rolling section in the middle reduces the average gradient quite a lot, the actual uphill sections, i.e. most of the course are 12-18%), Average power: 401W, Average Speed: 14.6 mph, Heart Rate data was corrupt.

I was smashed at the top, but couldn't risk staying up there in that weather to recover so set about the descent straight away proceeding back down the hill, which was as difficult as the ascent on exploded legs and given the brutal wind and rain, it actually took longer to descend than to go up! I got cleaned up and dried up and had a coffee and slice of cake in the pub with my family while intermittently chatting to other riders, including my minute man who I had caught and waiting for all of the results to come in.

After reading about everyone elses proper rides, I went off and did a gentle 10.04 miles this evening. It was light when I set off and pitch black when I got back. Took Hubby and my MMR says 1 hour. My bike computer says less but I have put it somewhere sensible and can't find it for the minute. We got home to find the bedroom door open and Billy the Greyhound has wee'd all over the bed - again. He is getting a real PITA about peeing on the bed/sofa/rugs etc despite taking him out a lot (there is nothing wrong with him the vet tested him at great expense)

We rode out of our close and then I rode back to hubby who was faffing with his bike computer dodah. So I sat and waited for a good 2 minutes before we headed off up the Silfield Road and then turned right to go to Wattlefield. Round the roads there and went straight on rather than turn right to Spooner Row on account of the roadworks - again. Our locale has been wall to wall roadworks since May and its getting tedious.
From there we went along a bit and then hooked a left and rode on the back roads to Ashwellthorpe and had to stop and get on the verge 3 times for tractors taking up the entire road. We encountered a couple of bits where the road was derailleur deep in mud (hopefully mud and not cow poo) and eventually made our way back to the Silfield Road after stopping a couple more times for tractors. They don't slow down much, do they?
We headed left on the Silfield Road as if to head home but then turned right up Long Lane. That was interesting, we sat in the middle of the road while about 20 cars came along before we could turn. The 4 x 4 behind us was not terribly patient and revved a bit but I am not sure where he expected us to go. Silly sod.
Down Long Lane (remembered the tight left hander, now covered in mud) and on to Silfield Street. Right there and left up the 'no through road' to head over the bridge to Rightup Lane. As we approached the bridge, my tyres were slipping a lot and I was calling out a warning to Hubby up ahead as he was negotiating the cycle gates there, when he disappeared from view. I jumped off my bike and angled my light and there he was, in a heap on the ground. Happily his Boardman Team Carbon hasn't a scratch on it although the whole shifter assembly is skewiff. Halfords hadn't put that on very tightly. Hubby was fine too BTW.
Once Hubby was upright we walked a bit up the bridge until the slippery leaves were behind us and then cycled down to near the end of Rightup Lane, turned right to Elise Way to a customer's house to collect new keys and then onwards to home.

Ken has found the bike computer. 54:36 ave 11.1mph.
Not sure about riding tomorrow. I have seen the local forecast and I don't like getting wet.

Glad your hubby is ok, @Saluki

I went out for a 50 mile pootle with the cycle group today. There were 19 of us which was a slight increase on the 6 who had signed up. Luckily the pub we went to for lunch was fairly quiet and the staff coped admirably. We even managed to score some sunshine, a nice change to the recent deluges. Don't think we'll be quite so lucky on Saturday...

Back on the road bike today, went out for a club ride with the Penzance Wheelers as a guest, did a very hilly 35 miles, the weather held off nicely, the only problem I had was with my brakes, I'm in desperate need of new blocks, coming down those Cornish hills with leaves on the ground was a little hairy.

Out on the MTB again today.
Headed along the Dramway track, which I hadn't used in years, a great alternative to the paved cyclelane on the other side of the busy Avon ringroad !
Then headed to Abson, Doynton & Pucklechurch before heading down into Westerleigh and picking up the local RUPP, halfway along at Ram Hill headed thru Burn Wood for an excellent stretch of singletrack , more off road took me back onto the Dramway before heading home. 33kms in total.

I took the new (second hand) bike out for a test ride today, only about 16-18mi though but along country lanes in Norfolk. Really happy with it, totally different experience on a drop bar that fits. It got dark while I was out so I had a terrifying trip home, limping along with a 'be seen' light. It was fine until cars kept blinding me. I've got a sore lower back but I fitted the bike fairly well I think I just need to get used to the new position since I'd already strained it this week.

Out for a ride by myself today. I don't start work today for another hour and a quarter at time of typing so I went out on the bike after seeing the doc this morning and using up all his tissues. New meds and a top up of pain killers plus a nice bike ride will see me straight for the day at least.

I decided to ride my nice 11.04 mile route through Wreningham, Hethel, along the cycle path where the blackberries and sloes grow in abundance (Note to self, that freezer drawer is chokka so get pie making) then home via the very outskirts of Ketteringham, over the A11 and home. Getting back up Silfield Road hill was a PITA as I got stuck behind a skip lorry. I actually got stuck behind him all the way down the hill, had to stop and put a foot down as he crept round the little roundabout at the bottom and then pedal slowly up the hill topping out at a massive 6mph  I normally ride up that wee hill at aournd 13 - 14mph - and get scalped regularly by strava hunters.

Home in time for a cuppa and some toast. Hubby is out walking a local dog and I have mentioned to him that I think that his Boardman is getting fat with lack of exercise. Its going to rain all weekend so I think that I will stay indoors and work on Here Comes the Sun instead. I would like to ride but hate going out in the rain.

Do I need to get the spray plaster out?
Mr P was unexpectedly called in to work and we had tickets to see Planes at one of the little local theatres.... we made the decision to cycle there which is the furthest we have ever been and it is not a nice route, it is all up hill 1/2 way there and all down hill the other 1/2 which means just as I got to the why? why? why? stage whoosh we were whizzing along shouting woo hoo, (shouting woo hoo is a requirement for us) it only took us double what google said it would take us so although we had made allowances we were 10 minutes late, which was fine as we just missed the trailers - but was bad as the coffee/tea kiosk had shut much to my dismay . Planes was indeed very good, we laughed, we cried, we rejoiced. On the way home, we stopped for sausage rolls & cake and a much need very large coffee for me, so we had to push part of the nasty uphill home until we came to the play park, so we stopped there I drank coffee, small people got very muddy, we pressed on up hill.

It rained very hard in short spells - this was quite welcoming as we were hot and sweaty and eurgh. We stopped at the supermarket which we had to as spag bol was decided on for dinner and we needed mince. I did not want to stop as we were on the downhill stretch again. As we packed the shopping a strange man had a conversation with me about Maggots trailer and his home made trailers and how he cycled to Dover when he meant to only go as far as Chichester and that the lbs cannot strip a sturmey archer hub and things like that. Then with a whoosh and a bang and a clank it was downhill all the way home (except for the hump back railway bridge) User76 was sharing the trailer with the fruit this was a bad idea I should have given her the vanish & kitchen roll.... as she ate lots of the shopping and shouted faster faster in between mouthfuls.

I quite like downhill I do not at all not even a teensy weensy bit like up hill at all not even tiny up hill.
